*In New York City Wednesday night to premiere her passion project “Belief,” Oprah Winfrey spoke to “Extra’s” AJ Calloway on the red carpet about a number of current topics, including Lamar Odom.

The TV mogul said she was “devastated” to hear that the former NBA star is fighting for his life after being found unconscious at a Las Vegas brothel.

“It reminded me of having to deal with drugs in my own family… It is a battle that you can’t win until they decide they want to win.” She went on, “In my own family we lost that battle, I put my sister through rehab twice, she came out of rehab and went right back on Oxycontin and there it was, gone, dead.”

Oprah said she feels for Lamar’s friends and family, “I know how frustrating it is because you want to be able to help, you want to be able to do something.”

As for “Belief,” which is narrated by Winfrey and explores the concepts of faith, religion and belief among diverse cultures all across the world, she said, “I’m really excited because you know at a time when I was going through challenges, building a network, trying to figure out what will the audience respond to… I literally sat down with myself and thought, what is it that I really want to say… It’s about looking at stories around the world that show what people believe and how we’re all connected.”

“Belief” premieres October 18 on OWN.
