Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults – Many at risk of eye disease aren’t getting an important annual Exam The simple test that could detect threats to their eyesight

*You change the oil in your car. You rotate your tires. You get your furnace serviced every year.

And you make sure to schedule an annual physical. These are all simple steps we take to prevent small problems from becoming big ones.

Yet many people skip one important health exam. An annual, dilated eye exam is an essential test that should be part of routine healthcare screenings for anyone living with diabetes, a disease which increases the risk of developing eye problems.

While eye disease is ranked #2 among diabetes concerns, a recent eye-opening survey of people with diabetes shows that less than half (44%) of the respondents say they are very knowledgeable about eye diseases.

76% of people say that they manage their diabetes because they are concerned about complications, yet one third of those people are not getting an annual dilated eye exam.

This simple eye test can detect vision problems and common diabetic eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema, both of which can lead to vision loss if not treated.

In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicts that the number of people age 40 and older with diabetic retinopathy will reach 16 million by 2050.

So even if you may think your eyes are healthy, the fact is that diabetic eye diseases often don’t have symptoms in early stages until people actually begin to lose their vision, which is why the annual dilated eye exam is so critical.
