Leon Isaac Kennedy Records PSA: ‘Call The Children Home’ (LISTEN)

*Best known for his starring role in the classic movie “Penitentiary;” a very popular Disc Jockey; a pace-setting syndicated TV dance show host (before Soul Train) and now evangelist; Leon Isaac Kennedy  has recorded a timely public service announcement (PSA) in support of parenting and mentoring titled “Call the Children Home” for The Menformation Project (scroll down to listen).

With the rise in routine police encounters becoming deadly, Kennedy agrees that it’s a two-way street, and there is an urgent need to coach and mentor our children – to help them navigate through encounters outside the home. Part of the PSA message says:

“If we don’t teach our children to respect authority in the home, they will not respect it in the street.”

Songwriter Larry Buford wrote and recorded “Call The Children Home” years ago. Motown’s late great David Ruffin expressed his interest in the song, but (sadly) died while recording arrangements were being made. Ruffin said he wanted to record it in the style of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.”

The PSA is recorded in 30 and 60 second intervals. Kennedy is hopeful that his friends in the radio communications industry like Radio One, iHeart, Cumulus and others will air the message. He points to The Menformation Project, Inc. and other mentoring organizations as vital to developing our youth – particularly those where the father is absent in the home.

60 sec version:

Marcus Farrow, CEO of The Menformation Project, Inc.  expressed his gratitude for Kennedy’s involvement. He says, “California Mentor Foundation reports that when boys are mentored well … 98% stay in school; 98% do not become teen parents; 85% do not use drugs; and 98% avoid gang participation. Unfortunately, many boys from father-absent homes are less likely to have a mentor. That is where The Menformation Project comes in to provide them with positive male role models and mentors.”
