*What happens when a naked white woman pops out of a duffel bag in Times Square covered in mysterious tattoos? Not a precautionary beatdown by NYPD, but the premise of NBC’s new drama “Blindspot,” which co-stars “Treme’s” Rob Brown as one of the FBI agents tasked with figuring out the tattoos, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste as his boss who runs the investigative operation.

It turns out that Jane Doe’s tattoos are clues to solving various crimes before they can happen. We also learn through flashback that Jane Doe gave a man permission to wipe her memory clean, which explains why she has no idea who she is, how she ended up in Times Square and why she’s covered in ink.

“It’s a disruption when she arrives, for myself, Edgar Reed,” Brown told the TCA of his character. “Because Edgar, I guess, is the most objective of the team, and he suppresses emotion unapologetically to focus on the task at hand. So, when she arrives, it’s very important to him that everybody has a level head about things, but some people don’t always do that.”

As Assistant Director of the FBI, Jean-Baptiste’s Bethany Mayfair is calling all the shots. That complete control comes in quite handy when one of Jane’s tats threatens to expose her secret – which, as of the first two episodes, has yet to be revealed.

In the pilot, Mayfair examines a picture of the tattoo in question — a number that matches a case file that just so happens to be sitting on a table in front of her. The “top secret” file has Mayfair’s name attached and a bunch of blacked-out words inside. Not blacked out, however, are the words “murder” and “embezzlement.”

Mayfair keeps her mouth shut about whatever connection she has to Jane’s number tattoo, and viewers are left wondering what on earth this all means.

Below, Jean-Baptiste gets thisclose to spilling the beans:

Last week’s episode didn’t get viewers any closer to Bethany’s mystery. Will episode 3?

Dubbed “Eight Slim Grins,” the episode premieres Monday (Oct. 5) at 10 p.m. on NBC.
