‘The Intern’: Robert De Niro is ‘De Hero’

*Legendary actor Robert De Niro is to be commended for his role in the new Nancy Meyers film “The Intern.”

He brings to fore the frustration of many seniors who’ve been side-lined in today’s high-tech/internet workforce, yet still have valuable skills and experience to offer.

The promotional poster reads “Experience never gets old,” and De Niro (Ben Whittaker) fits in as “De Hero” in a booming start-up company called About The Fit, run by founder and CEO AnneHathaway (Jules Ostin).

While my wife and I both agreed the movie would best be suited for the Lifetime Movie Network, many seniors don’t have cable or internet service, so the theater was the best option. It’s a rewarding story of a senior finding his legs again in the workforce. De Niro carefully approached his intern role by crossing all the “T’s” and dotting all the “I’s.”

Upon learning the quirks and idiosyncrasies of the younger female CEO (she rides a bike around the office), he was hilarious in practicing blinking his eyes as he spoke in order to appease her. The style he brought to the workplace and the little details he saw to are reminders that being structured, balanced and organized are value-adds that should not be abandoned at any cost.

I don’t think anyone could have played the role better than De Niro who often responded to others not with words but by facial expression. He’s earned every wrinkle and every nuance.

Hathaway played a very believable and realistic role too – she was only living out the “Devil-may-care/Skies the limit” ideology that her generation was nurtured on. De Niro helped her find the balance she so desperately needed.

The ultimate payoff was that De Niro found new companionship in an unexpected way.

On another note: Kudos to the new Cinemark Theatres located in the SouthBay Pavillion Mall in Carson, California. The facility is top-notch with self-service (except for the popcorn); and the soft leather seats recline with lots of leg room – very relaxing!!
