Aisha Tyler won’t Apologize for Preferring Her Career Over Kids

*Unlike Gabrielle Union, Tyra Banks, Chrissy Teigen and “Sex and the City” star Kim Catrall, Aisha Tyler is pretty clear on the issue of motherhood vs. career.

Referencing Union’s comments about her professional life being the reason why she hasn’t had kids, MadameNoire.com noted that Tyler praised the “Being Mary Jane” fixture’s honesty while detailing her own reasons for putting career over being a mom.

“I was with someone at 19 and I was married at 23 and I didn’t want kids when I was in my 20s,” Tyler said during a recent episode of “The Talk.” “I wasn’t mentally prepared to take care of them, I was focused on my career. And then when I got to be in my 40s and I thought about having kids, I wasn’t able to have kids naturally. I don’t regret it.”

“These were my choices and I don’t regret them,” she said. “I won’t apologize for choosing my career over kids.”

Tyler’s “The Talk” co-host Sara Gilbert agreed with her colleague as she weighed in on the topic as she voiced her stance on how society views women who opt for a different path than the traditional one.

“I don’t know why there’s a stigma… ,” said Gilbert, who is a mother. “I always think it’s amazing that people know themselves, and know whether they can care for someone.”

Needless to say the debate over motherhood and a successful career continues. So what say you? Can a woman have the best of both worlds or is she relegated to choose one or the other?

Is Tyler right or wrong about putting her career ahead of having children? Weigh in with your thoughts below.

  1. There is no right or wrong answer to this question. It’s a personal decision. It only becomes a right or wrong answer when your decision effects others, which mainly happens when people have kids they don’t want, or can’t take care of, and others wind up having to take care of them. It’s a smart woman does what’s best for her and not what others think is best for her.
