*Los Angeles– As the box office continues to increase for the hit film, “Straight Outta Compton,” former Death Row Records singer turned preacher and gospel artist, Elder B. Alexander McCargo and his choir, Kingdom Worship, headlines the free, outdoor gospel music concert, “Love Fest 2015” (“Love Fest”) being held in downtown LA on Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 1 pm – 5 pm with free food and beverages (non-alcoholic) for attendees.
And that an artist of McCargo’s caliber will perform at the inaugural Love Fest, speaks volumes that it’s the first of many more to come – a great stamp of approval from someone who’s worked with Grammy-winning artists, such as gospel legend Dorinda Clark-Coles and Mary, Mary, also stars of their own WEtv series.
And McCargo isn’t the only former rapper at Love Fest – DJ Cue of Virgin Records ‘90s hit group College Boyz of “Victim of the Ghetto” fame, now Pastor Cue of The Row Church, will perform his signature spoken word.
Opening Love Fest is powerhouse choir, Lorenzo Johnson & Praizum who’ve performed with gospel superstars, Marvin Sapp, Kim Burrell, Bebe Winans and Kiera “Kiki” Sheard.
Others performing at the interfaith Love Fest include: popular eclectic music group, Rock Boy Fresh; Latino Christian contemporary group, All For Love Sound; MTM/Minister Through Me; Park Windsor Baptist Church Men’s Choir, and the award-winning Greater Los Angeles Cathedral Choir, that’s performed with major artists such as, Grammy-winners Bishop Hezekiah Walker and Tye Tribbett.
The acclaimed praise dance troupe, Daughters of Zion will also take the stage. Revered jazz saxophonist, Larry O. Williams, who also has two Christian album, will perform—as he has at the famed Baked Potato and played with music icons of various genres, such as B.B. King, Chuck Berry and The Gap Band.
Love Fest was created by Pastor William Binion of the Valley’ Perpetual Praise Worship Center. However, he’s presenting Love Fest under the umbrella name, “Kingdom Minds,”because for him the adage “great minds think alike” also has a spiritual take, “good minds think alike”… And the “good” comes from his wanting Love Fest to be an annual conduit to bridge the unfortunate, but well-known divide between downtown’s upscale residents and lower income residents as well as the homeless in shelters and on the streets.
With the scripture, “This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you” (John 25:15) as the event theme, Pastor Binion believes there’s no better way to show such love than to have Love Fest at the intersections where those diverse economic worlds meet – 5th Street & San Pedro, and the intersection’s four corners will be closed off by LADOT.
Though Love Fest is new, Pastor Binion and his church working with the homeless is not—they’ve supported the Downtown Women’s Center for 6 years. And of course, Pastor Cue has been a homeless advocate for years, with the Row Church’s ministry and “church without walls.”
But at the end of the day Pastor Binon notes, “I also want this to be a free event that draws everyone from around LA County regardless of race, religion or nationality, who just want to enjoy good music and good food, where the only admission is to have a good time.”
