Gabrielle Union Believes a Career and Family Don’t Mix

gabrielle-union *In the world of Gabrielle Union, a successful career doesn’t mix with raising a family.

Chatting with Redbook, the “Being Mary Jane” star responded with “not really” when weighing in on whether women can have a career and family. For Union, it’s her professional life that’s the reason for her not having kids. As a result, the actress mentioned that she’s among those who typically encounter negative feedback from walking the same path

“There’s a certain amount of shame that is placed on women who have perhaps chosen a career over starting a family younger,” Union told Redbook. “The penance for being a career woman is barrenness. You feel like you’re wearing a scarlet letter.”

As the interview progressed, Union touched on the negative perception in many workplaces of women who are pregnant, saying, As much as there are strides being made — you get pregnant, your career takes a hit.”

“You can’t have a bad day,” said Union, who is a stepmother to husband Dwayne Wade’s three children. “Don’t you dare cry at work. Don’t raise your voice. Especially if you’re a black woman in corporate America — now you’re ‘the angry black woman.’”

Although Union’s comments may register with many folks, a case can be made for black women such as First Lady Michelle Obama, Jada Pinkett Smith and Halle Berry, who have managed to find a good balance with a successful careers and raising a family.

So what say you, Is Union right in believing a worthwhile career doesn’t mix with being a mother or is she off base in light of those who have had good results from successfully blending the two?
