*The threat of rain in New York has just made life a lot easier for football fans who’ve been waiting all spring and summer for Thursday’s NFL kickoff game, but didn’t want to miss Serena Williams at the U.S. Open.
Her semifinal match against Roberta Vinci of Italy has been postponed until Friday, Sept. 11, because of rain in the forecast, the U.S. Tennis Association announced.
Williams (No. 1) vs. Vinci (unseeded) was supposed to start Thursday at 7 p.m., followed by the women’s semifinal match between No. 2 Simona Halep of Romania and No. 26 Flavia Pennetta of Italy. But both are being rescheduled for Friday, starting at 11 a.m. ET.
The men’s semifinals will be played afterward, beginning at 5 p.m. instead of the originally scheduled 3 p.m.
Williams is trying to become the first tennis player since Steffi Graf in 1988 to win all four Grand Slam singles titles — the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open — in the same season.
