*Kanye West’s announcement of a 2020 presidential run generated all kinds of memes – and at least one magazine cover.
Next week’s cover of The New Yorker imagines, what if…?
The illustration has the rapper holding up a paper that reads “Trump Defeats Kanye,” which mirrors the iconic photo of Harry Truman holding up a newspaper that wrongly announced his defeat at the hands of New York Gov. Thomas E. Dewey in the 1948 presidential election.
Illustrator Barry Blitt explains:
“Kanye West’s announcement of his intention to seek the Presidency reminds us that it’s not too early to start thinking about the 2020 campaign. (2016’s already old hat by now, anyway). And when one considers Mr. West, it doesn’t take a whole lot of imagination to be reminded of another scrappy kid who won the Presidency, back in 1948, against all odds. The press wrote him off, too. That’s right—Harry Truman.”
