‘Being Mary Jane’ Season 3 to Feature Loretta Devine and Jill Scott (WATCH)

Being-Mary-Jane*Season three of BET’s “Being Mary Jane” is set to include a lot of what made the Gabrielle Union-starring show so popular as it brings in a couple of well-known actors.

Entertainment Weekly reports that “The Carmichael Show” star Loretta Devine and singer-actress Jill Scott will come on board the series as guest stars for the upcoming season. Devine will play Cecilia, a bookstore owner whose car was hit by Mary Jane’s vehicle in the car accident that occurred at end of the season 2 finale. EW notes the Cecilia’s actions will be financially motivated as she uses the accident to extort Mary Jane for $25,000.

Despite the negativity, BET revealed the pair will become close when Cecilia “offers MJ unwanted, but invaluable, pieces of advice and wisdom.”

For Scott, the set-up will be different, with her playing Jackie, Niecy’s (Raven Goodwin) mom. Describing Scott’s character, BET mentioned that she is “back in town just long enough to show her [daughter] some tough love and Patrick (Richard Brooks) some much needed sexual attention.”

Overall, viewers can look forward to season three picking up where  season two left off. Highlights from the season ender included a newly promoted Mary Jane discovering the truth about Lisa (Latarsha Rose) and her ex David (Stephen Bishop)’s relationship just moments after she broke up with Sheldon (Gary Dourdan).

BET goes on to mention that the injured Mary Jane will have a new rival to deal with as she’s “sidelined at work when a beautiful young Latina anchor, Marisol, shines as her replacement, while she is out on medical leave.” Although she manages to save her job, Mary Jane finds herself embarking on a “life cleanse” that causes her rethink the path her career is on as well as her personal life. To go along with that, the network alludes to a good bit of drama for Mary Jane as a “tragedy in the family will throw her world into chaos once more.”

“Being Mary Jane” creator Mara Brock Akil provided a glimpse at Mary Jane’s world this go round as she shared with EW that “Season 3 is about new beginnings, putting lessons learned to the test, and of course healing,”

“After receiving that phone call from David and getting into a car accident, Mary Jane has no other options but to work on her recovery from the accident, from toxic relationships, and from her self-destructive ways. It’s a season that will remind fans why they fell in love with Mary Jane to begin with,” Akil said. “She’s flawed and somewhat broken, but watching her piece her life together is beautiful.”

Season three of “Being Mary Jane” is set to premiere at its new time (9 p.m. E/P) on Tuesday, Oct. 20 on BET. For a sneak peak, via EW, check out the video below:
