*Minutes after squashing one beef on stage at Sunday’s “VMAs,” Nicki Minaj threw some more beef on the grill.

In a recent interview with the New York Times, VMA host Miley Cyrus was asked to comment on the Taylor Swift-Nicki Minaj Twitter feud that made headlines several weeks ago.

A quick refresher: Minaj tweeted her displeasure about the VMA nominations being unfairly skewed toward white artists with “slim bodies” while her “Anaconda” video was ignored for the major categories. Swift called out Minaj, believing the tweet was about her white supermodel-heavy video for “Bad Blood.”

Cut to Cyrus in the New York Times. Asked about the Minaj/Swift exchange, Miley responded:

“If you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But don’t make it just about yourself. What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite. I think there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love. You don’t have to start this pop star against pop star war. It became Nicki Minaj and Taylor in a fight, so now the story isn’t even on what you wanted it to be about.”

Minaj chose to respond on stage, in front of millions. After a beef-ending performance with Taylor Swift to open the show, Nicki won the Best Hip Hop Video award for “Anaconda.” At the end of her acceptance speech, she threw back to the VMA host by saying: “And now back to this b**ch that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press. Miley, what’s good?!”

Nicki mean-mugged for a bit before eventually smiling, as if it were all a joke. The camera cut to Cyrus, who said immediately: “Hey, we’re all in this industry, we all do interviews and we all know how they manipulate s**t. …Nicki, congratu-f**ing-lations.”

The camera cut back to Minaj, and suddenly it didn’t seem like a joke anymore. The rapper appeared taken aback by Miley’s tone. Nicki’s mic was turned off, but lip-readers could see that she said to Miley, “Don’t play with me, b**ch. Don’t play with me.”

Minutes later, Cyrus appeared to take another shot at Nicki – without mentioning her name.

In introducing the VMA’s artist to watch award, she said, “The past losers of the award have still gone on to make their mark on the VMA stage — me,” Cyrus said. “I lost this award back in 2008 and I was fine with it, whatever, because it’s no big deal. It’s just an award. And I persevered!”
