Petition to Keep Mike Vick from Joining Steelers Fails

*In spite of some unhappy fans who think he’s not only a crappy quarterback, but an even worse human being, it looks like Michael Vick has been signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

When word got out on Tuesday that Vick, 35, was set to meet with the Steelers about being the number 2 QB behind Ben Rothelisburger after Bruce Gradkowski suffered a dislocated finger, a Change.org petition was started to keep Vick off the Steelers roster. The reason some are bent out of shape is of course due to Vick’s prison stint on federal dog-fighting charges. Within several hours, more than 5000 people had signed the petition.

“Michael Vick is a convicted felon and no-class piece of crap. He is also a terrible QB which is why he has no team. Let’s united as Steeler fans – as NFL fans – and stop him from playing on our team! Steelers fans united! Sign to keep Vick from ever wearing the coveted Steelers uniform!!”

Yes, we know some animal/dog lovers will never let go of what Vick did, but you have wonder if racism is really the root the hate. After all, the team’s starting QB, Rothelisburger is not the most stand-up guy. Wikipedia notes that Roethlisberger was accused of sexual assault in 2008 and in 2010. While no charges were filed, Steelers president Art Rooney II was “furious,” and the latter allegation resulted in Roethlisberger’s suspension from play under the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Roethlisberger also lost endorsement deals after the allegations.

However in righteous indignation on the part of some fans aside, the Steelers and Vick have decided to do business. On Tuesday evening, it was confirmed that Vick had signed a one-year deal with the team.

We hope it doesn’t somehow cost him his job, but coach Mike Tomlin is 100 percent behind the signing of Vick.

“Obviously we’re sensitive to those potential things but we are going to do our due diligence. Rest assured that we’ve done that, but rest assured he’s done a lot since he’s gone through some of the things he’s gone through and his track record at this point in that regard speaks for itself.”
