*Kerry Washington gave birth to her first child 16 months ago and she’s flaunting her incredible physique in the September issue of Self magazine, but don’t congratulate the “Scandal” star on her post-baby body.
Washington tells the publication that she rejects the notion that her body is “back” to how it was before she gave birth to daughter Isabelle Amarachi.
“A few weeks ago, my manager asked:
‘Do you feel like you’re back? I feel like you’re back,'” Washington told Self. “She meant it as a total compliment, but we had this great conversation where I was like, ‘You know what? I try really hard not to use that language, because it’s not about going backward in life.’”
“I’ve been really focused on not being ‘back’ to anything, but being the best version of myself right now,” she said. “My body is the site of a miracle now. I don’t want to be pre-miracle.”
Washington wakes up before most of Los Angeles to train early, work on her hit series and make it home in time to cuddle with her daughter and husband, former pro football player Nnamdi Asomugha.
“I try to get it in so I can be back with my kid early,” Kerry says, adding that, in spite of her motherly duties, she makes a point to never miss a workout. “I have to take care of myself in order to live life the way I want to,” she says. “It’s important to have rest days. But in the long run, if I don’t work out for, like, three days, I feel worse, not better.”
Washington returns as ball-bustin’ Olivia Pope when “Scandal” Season 5 premieres Thursday, September 24 on ABC. Series creator Shonda Rhimes has revealed that the new season will pick up almost where they left off.
“That was a pretty harrowing place where the world had been blown apart for everybody except for Olivia and Fitz, who were left on the Truman balcony … doing some kissin’. But everybody else was in a fairly low-at-heart place. Mellie wasn’t living in the White House because Fitz kicked her out. Jake said he was walking away. Quinn was thinking about killing Huck. Things weren’t going so well for people, and we pick up right there in that environment,” Rhimes said.
