Michael Sam Quits Football Due to Mental Health Issues

michael sam (alouettes)

*We can only wonder what the hell is going on with Michael Sam.

We’ve got a feeling that just being Michael Sam is a burden most folks are glad they don’t have to endure.

If you haven’t heard, Sam, the NFL and CFL’s first openly gay player, is taking a time-out from the sport due to what he calls mental health concerns. Seemingly out of the blue, on Friday he tweeted that he was leaving the Montreal Alouettes.

“The last 12 months have been very difficult for me, to the point where I became concerned with my mental health,” Sam tweeted. “Because of this I am going to step away from the game at this time. I thank the Alouettes for this opportunity and hope to be back on the field soon. Thank you all for your understanding and support.”

Sam, who took home SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2013 at Missouri, was drafted by the NFL’s St. Louis Rams in 2014. After that he found a spot on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad in Sept. 14, but was kicked to the curb a month later.

He made his CFL debut with the Montreal Alouettes on Aug. 7

  1. He has mental issues. He thought they’d be fixed by coming out and being accepted, but that doesn’t work.

  2. Being gay is not a mental issue he has to overcome. It’s the non-stop barrage of negativity towards this young man that has temporarily broken him and it’s primarily from our community. He will be fine eventually and play again I believe. He’s very talented.

    • He should have kept his d@mn mouth closed about his sexual preferences.
His preferences has nothing to do with football..
This “non-stop barrage of negativity” was brought on by himself..

      • I totally agree, did he really think this was going to be a Cinderella story? Now all the other gay athletes are going to put bolt-locks on their closets!!!!

  3. I knew there was something mentally deficient about him when, he thought he could skip of and play pro football after bustin’ slob with a man on national tv, in front of a bazillion male football fans. Now, we are somewhat more progressive and tolerant than in years before. And coming out as gay is one thing, but smooching a man and then prancing into a locker room full of alpha males to put on shoulder pads and a helmet won’t work. I’ve never watched a football game in my life, and I knew he’d never play pro ball. And then to add insult to injury, all this was done with cake icing smeared all over their faces. I think the visual was just too much for em’. Even the gay players. Who nobody knows is gay. And now never will. Ever.
