Michael Sam Quits Football Due to Mental Health Issues

*We can only wonder what the hell is going on with Michael Sam.

We’ve got a feeling that just being Michael Sam is a burden most folks are glad they don’t have to endure.

If you haven’t heard, Sam, the NFL and CFL’s first openly gay player, is taking a time-out from the sport due to what he calls mental health concerns. Seemingly out of the blue, on Friday he tweeted that he was leaving the Montreal Alouettes.

“The last 12 months have been very difficult for me, to the point where I became concerned with my mental health,” Sam tweeted. “Because of this I am going to step away from the game at this time. I thank the Alouettes for this opportunity and hope to be back on the field soon. Thank you all for your understanding and support.”

Sam, who took home SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2013 at Missouri, was drafted by the NFL’s St. Louis Rams in 2014. After that he found a spot on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad in Sept. 14, but was kicked to the curb a month later.

He made his CFL debut with the Montreal Alouettes on Aug. 7
