Will Smith Down As Exec. Prod. for ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ Reboot

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air cast*Add “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” to the list of classic TV shows getting a reboot.

TVLine reports that the Fresh Prince himself, Will Smith, is on board for the project as a producer.

Multiple sources tell the site that Smith’s production company, Overbrook Entertainment, is in the very early stages of developing a present-day family comedy that will put a new spin of the fish-out-of-water concept that made up “Fresh Prince” while maintaining the spirit of the original series.

TVLine adds that a pitch for the “Fresh Prince” comeback is currently being finalized, with Overbrook gearing up to shop it around in the coming weeks. Smith would serve as an executive producer alongside his Overbrook producing partners James Lassiter, Caleeb Pinkett and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Although NBC isn’t involved in the reboot, the network’s Entertainment Chairman, Robert Greenblatt, stated Thursday (Aug. 13) at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills that he would “be happy to talk to Will [Smith] about it.”

Airing on NBC during the ‘90’s, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” ran for six seasons before ending its time on the small screen in 1996. In addition, the sitcom is noted for launching Smith’s acting career.
