Dr. Dre’s ‘Compton’ Expected to Top Billboard 200

*Dr. Dre’s first album in 16 years, “Compton: The Soundtrack,” is projected to move around 300,000 units, according to Billboard. The estimated figures will reportedly put Dre on track to pull in the No. 2 album on the Billboard 200 charts, much like his previous album “Chronic,” with a No. 2 debut and selling 516,000 copies in its first week back in 1999.

The album dropped a week ahead of the theatrical release of “Straight Outta Compton,” the N.W.A biopic directed by F. Gary Gray. Compton features Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, The Game, Ice Cube, Jill Scott and Marsha Ambrosius. Spin the album on Apple Music here.

The rapper-producer announced last week that he’s donating his royalties from the album to fund an arts center in Compton.

Dre and original N.W.A members Ice Cube, DJ Yella and MC Ren participated in a YouTube livestream on Tuesday. They were joined by F. Gary Gray and cast members O’Shea Jackson, Jr., Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell, moderator MC Lyte and “members of the Compton community” to discuss the “rise and fall of N.W.A, as well as topical and social issues” addressed in the film, Rolling Stone reports.

“I don’t want anything to pour water on my legacy,” Dre said on his The Pharmacy Beats 1 radio show, calling the first few scripts “corny” until Ice Cube took over.

“Ice Cube, he actually grabbed the bull by the horns. He went in and got the script done and I read this new script and it was like, ‘Oh, OK, I like that,'” Dre said. “Then, when Gary Gray decided he wanted to come on board and direct, I’m like, ‘OK, we might have something here.'”

Watch the livestream below, video starts around twenty minutes in.

“Straight Outta Compton” opens nationwide this Friday, August 14.
