*Lee Daniels is bringing a new music-based drama to Fox.
The co-creator and executive producer of “Empire” is working on “Star,” about three girls in Atlanta who form a band and their rise to the top.
Fox Chairman and CEO Dana Walden made the announcement Thursday morning at the Television Critics Association press tour. An “Empire” panel featuring Daniels and the cast of “Empire” is scheduled for later today, when the filmmaker will likely provide more details.
Until then, Walden said Daniels’ inspiration for “Star” was everything from “Dreamgirls,” to manufactured groups that weren’t formed organically, but rather placed together by producers. That kind of formation lends to a lot of drama, noted Walden.
An eventual crossover with “Empire” is a possibility, said Walden, but it’s not planned, and it wouldn’t happen right away.
