Darren Wilson Opens Up A Year After His Killing of Mike Brown

*Nearly a year after he gunned down and unarmed 18-year-old Mike Brown and unwittingly started the #BlackLivesMatter movement, former Ferguson, MO policeman Darren Wilson has given his first interview. Wilson told The New Yorker that he and his family have to take precautions when they go out.

“We try to go somewhere — how do I say this correctly? — with like-minded individuals. You know. Where it’s not a mixing pot.”

Wilson, who was not indicted in Brown’s killing, still lives in relative seclusion the St Louis area. He says he hasn’t reflected much on who Brown was because he had been preoccupied with the waves of protests in Ferguson and the civil lawsuit Brown’s parents filed against him in May.

“You do realize that his parents are suing me?” Wilson told The New Yorker’s Jake Halpern. “So I have to think about him.”

When asked if he’d ever given thought about who Brown was as a person, his answer was telling:

“who he was as a person?” “Not really,” Wilson admits. “Because it doesn’t matter at this point. Do I think he had the best upbringing? No. Not at all.”

In the days following the fatal shooting, he informed his then six-year old stepson that Michael Brown “was a bad guy,” and went on to recall Brown as having “the most intense, aggressive face” during their altercation, similar to that of a “demon.”

Wilson who’s been without work since he resigned from the Ferguson police department, told the magazine that he’s interviewed for a few law enforcement positions, but the Brown case is “too hot an issue, so it makes me unemployable.”
