‘Silly’ is How Ben Carson Sees the ‘Black Lives Matter’ Movement

ben carson*In the eyes of Dr. Ben Carson, the debate over the Black Lives Matter movement is nothing more than “political correctness going amuck.”

Appearing Sunday (Aug. 2) on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the Republican presidential hopeful mentioned that talk involving police violence against African Americans should be “a little more mature.”

“If you hire a plumber and he does a bad job, do you say all plumbers are bad? Let’s go out and kill them? I don’t think we do that,” Carson told moderator Chuck Todd while harping back to point he made earlier this year in the wake of the riots in Baltimore. “We need to be a little more mature, but certainly in cases where police are doing things that are inappropriate, I think we ought to investigate those promptly and justice should be swift.”

Regarding Democrat presidential hopeful Martin O’Malley’s apology to black activists after saying “black lives matter, white lives matter, all lives matter,” Carson viewed it as something that O’Malley should’ve have done.

“That’s what I’m talking about is silly,” said Carson, the only African American among those gunning for the Republican presidential nomination. “Of course all lives matter, and of course we should be very concerned about what’s going on, particularly in our inner cities.”

Carson’s comments follow remarks made during an interview with ThinkProgress that had him expressing his belief that the Black Lives movement is divisive. Going deeper into his view on the topic, Carson aired out his stance at a rally to defund Planned Parenthood on Tuesday (July 28), saying, “We need to talk about what the real issues are and not get caught up in silliness like this matters or that matters.”

“Of course all lives matter. I don’t want to get into it, it’s so silly,” he continued. “Black lives are part of all lives, right? When we’re talking about a culture of life, then we ought to be talking about a culture of life and not allow ourselves to get caught up in all the divisive rhetoric and terminology and political correctness. It’s the reason we can’t make any progress as a society.”
