*The hour neared midnight and the walk through the park was filled with laughter, conversation and snippets from the songs heard in the preceding hours. There were the two women singing Fantasia’s “Free Yourself,” the brother humming the Lyfe Jennings classic “Must Be Nice” and the young lady who stopped the crowd when she began belting out notes from Dru Hill’s “Beauty.”
This was just one scene, from one night at last summer’s “Essence of Entertainment” at the Dell Music Center in Philadelphia. The 2014 Essence of Entertainment Summer Concert series featured The O’Jay’s, Chrisette Michele, Babyface, Anthony Hamilton, Fantasia, Brian McKnight, Robert Glasper, Dru Hill and many more, but 2015 has upped the ante.
The Dell Music Center, or Dell East, is located in the expansive Fairmount Park and each Thursday evening the host for some of the greatest entertainment offered anywhere! This year’s Essence of Entertainment concert series kicked off with none other than Philadelphia’s own Patti Labelle and continues with Babyface, Toni Braxton and Mint Condition. Also featured this summer are the aforementioned Fantasia, Lyfe Jennings and Anthony Hamilton. Other evenings will feature the likes of Stephanie Mills, Estelle, Johnny Gill, Erykah Badu, After 7, Bootsy Collins and still more.
Tickets can be purchased via the Dell’s website and at the box office, but many shows sell out, but you can always grab your favorite lawn chair and listen from the park.
