Ringside Update: Thurman & Callazo / Boy, What A Night Of Boxing!

*From the Atlantic, to the Pacific there were plenty of good fights on display this weekend as we saw Keith “One Time” Thurman defend his WBA welterweight title against Luis Collazo in a bout that was scheduled for twelve, but didn’t go past eight because Collazo’s corner decided they’d had enough after he received a bad cut over his eye.

This wasn’t an easy win for Thurman as Collazo gave him all he had and had him hurt in the fifth round with a solid shot to the body. There were a few ring observers that believed that Thurman may even exposed some of his vulnerabilities in this bout.

At any rate, a win is a win no matter how you look at it. I’m hearing that Thurman is calling out Mayweather which would be an interesting match. Personally I’d like to see him go against Timothy Bradley but of course that won’t likely happen too soon due to the politics that’s involved. But you never know, anything is possible.

Folks, I have to tell you something. Kieth “One Time” Thurman is one dangerous individual in the welterweight division that packs a real punch with both hands and could have Mayweather with his hands full if they ever got in the ring together. And with the division just full of fighters like Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley (who by the way, would make for an exciting match with Thurman), Shawn Porter, Amir Khan, Ruslan Provodnikov, just to name a few, we could possibly see some very exciting fights in the future (that’s if they could be made).

And don’t forget, there’s a guy out there who hails out of the U.K. by the name of Kell Brooke who happens to be the IBF welterweight champ that’s also a force to be reckoned with. As I always say, we’ll see what happens.

Mauricio Herrera tangled up with “Hammering” Hank Lundy the other night out here in Los Angeles at the legendary Memorial Sports Arena. This is the same joint that the great Muhammad Ali fought the “Old Mongoose” Archie Moore in the early sixties and stop him in the fourth round as he predicted. This is also the place that the late President John F. Kennedy spoke after winning the Democratic nomination. I hear that’s it’s about to be torn down for some new development. I think that it’s too bad, because it really does have a lot of history with it.

Folks, this was a real barn burner as these two guys went toe to toe for most of this one as it went the distance. And at the end of the night the judges gave it to Herrera. I actually gave it to Lundy who is one of those fighters with the old school style of boxing and always comes into the ring ready to scrap. He’s been featured quite a bit on the now defunct ESPN Friday night fights and is always entertaining to watch.

Coming up on August 29 at the Staples Center is the much awaited match between Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares. This one may turn out to be the fight of the year folks, so you don’t want miss it. It will also be telecast live on ESPN by the way.

That’s all for now, we’ll talk more later.
