*After six months of being engaged, Michael Sam is now a single man.
A source close to the infamous gay athlete confirmed to Us Weekly on Tuesday (June 30) that Sam has called off his engagement to fiancé Vito Cammisano. The couple is now history, with Sam also calling off his relationship with Cammisano.
“They’ve been rocky for months,” a source told Us about the duo.
Although Cammisano still has a photo of him and Sam as his Twitter profile picture, Us reports that the former “Dancing With the Stars” competitor “is said to have scrubbed all evidence of his partner from Instagram.” Items Sam deleted a photo from the pair’s proposal atop St. Peters Basilica in Vatican City in January.
News of the breakup concludes a relationship that started when Sam and Cammisano were students at University of Missouri in 2011. The couple had no problem displaying their love at the time when they publicly shared a same-sex kiss when Sam was drafted to the St. Louis Rams in 2014.
Sam’s appreciation for Cammisano was prevalent when he received the Arthur Ashe Courage award at last year’s ESPYS. In his acceptance speech, Sam, the NFL’s first openly gay player, credited his partner with encouraging him to come out to his college football teammates.
