*After winning her first round match at Wimbledon on Monday, Serena Williams shared her feelings about the Charleston massacre, calling the June 17 shooting of nine black worshipers by an alleged white supremacist “unspeakably sad,” and recalling how she refused to play in South Carolina while the Confederate flag flew above the state legislature.

In 2000, Williams pulled out of the Family Circle Cup in South Carolina in support of the NAACP’s call for a boycott over the Confederate flag flying above the state house dome.

The flag was eventually moved to a monument in the grounds later that year.

“I wouldn’t go to Charleston until the flag was removed. Once it was, I went there, and only after the Confederate flag was removed,” Williams said after beating Margarita Gasparyan of Russia in the first round.

“What happened in Charleston is a tragedy yet again to our country, the United States. It’s really unspeakable how sad it is and how much of a toll it can have.

“But you just have to continue to have faith, continue to believe, continue to be positive, continue to help people to the best of your ability.”

Williams said she was proud of how the community reacted to the Charleston massacre.

“Everyone was so positive and a lot of people went there. Obviously Obama. It was a very emotional time for many people of all races in the United States, and outside the United States,” she said.

Both Serena and her sister Venus won their first round singles matches at the All England Club on Monday and are slated to play each other in the fourth round, should each make it that far.

The pair on Tuesday pulled out of Wimbledon’s women’s doubles. No reason was immediately given for the withdrawal. Misaki Doi and Stephanie Vogt were promoted to take the sisters’ place in the draw.

  1. I am so proud of you for taking the first stance on this issue. I wish more celebrities would by-pas the $ and stay true to the betterment of all people.

    • I do find it an outrage that the issue of a 150 year old flag is an issue when a Saudi Princess gets caught with 5 slaves in her possession in California and nobody seems to find offense with the charges simply being dropped. Where is the outrage? Where are the boycotts and sanctions there?

        • So she is plying in England. Wow! a great place to go. Guess who brought most of the slaves to this country. Isn’t she wonderful? Out doing so much for your race. Doesn’t know her history either!

    • I’m so happy the sisters took a stand.. More celebrities should follow suit .. Black lives matters

      • Who cares what a celebrity says when they don’t know what they are talking about to begin with. Who watches her anymore ?

  2. The Ku Klux Klan has been approved to hold a protest rally at the Statehouse next month against removing the Confederate battle flag, with the group calling accused mass murderer Dylann Roof a “young warrior.”

The Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan applied for the permit last week to hold a rally for 100 to 200 people on July 18 on the north side of the Statehouse.

That’s where the Confederate battle flag presently flies.

Brian Gaines, spokesman for the S.C. Budget and Control Board, said the state provides rally space at the Statehouse site when space is available or previously not reserved. (Columbia SC)

The move was not endorsed by Gov. Nikki Haley. “This is our state, and they are not welcome,” she said in a statement issued by her press office.

In its application permit, the Klan lists equipment needs as a podium and public address access. The group is headquartered out of Pelham, N.C.

The rally is slated from 3 to 5 p.m. July 18.

  3. May this be an example & JOINED MINDSET!!!! We MUST stand up “TOGETHER”!!!!! And …..the ONLY thang the Rightwjng has that though is “MISguided” lika MUTHa!!??, is their sense & practice of …solidarity. And them muthafkas will hop every site foriegn, domestic OR “cultural”, to carry out their mission statements/agenda/assignments, for …..headquarters. Now….if THEM dumb, kra, STUpid mofo’s can get & “stay” together (even ‘on THE most “void of truth/facts” reDIC shyt known to mankind???, then….WTF can’t We ‘on what we ALL know is…..”BEST” for all mankind??!! TJBT! Ps…..and again, well done, sista….WELL done!!!! Hashtag…..”WINNING”!

  4. Time to show some respect for the Stars & Bars. A recent photo of some dodo desecrating the Confederate Flag shows just how outrageous this movement has become. The posting guild lines for this site prohibit me from describing or showing this act of vandalism. For proof of how disgusting the anti-Confederate Flag movement has become, go to the following link.

    • Its no less disgusting than what that flag represents , Americas moral compass os stuck in the 19 th century at least in the boondocks

  5. Way to stand up for what’s right. It is unconscionable that a Confederate flag be flown on any buildings, let alone a government building. Many people today equate this symbol with the kidnapping and enslavement of innocent people who were stolen from their homes and families , brought across the sea and tortured physically and mentally over time… beaten and often killed … slavery in the United Sates is the most savage and brutal periods in history… Anyone who feels that flying a flag that represents such hatred is justified, must be a truly horrific person. Ancestors of those who kept slave should be begging forgiveness to the ancestors of those that were enslaved… not throwing this flag in their face… my god… have we no shame??

  6. Don’t Judge Selena Williams for her Action, She has her feeling toward Hot Topic about Flag. Everyone in the U.S.A has his or her rights. Respect it.

  7. I’m so proud that Serena Stood up for what she believes and on the same note WENDY WILLIAMS SAID ON HER SHOW LAST WEEK THAT SHE IS DUE TO PERFORM HER STAND UP SHOW IN DURHAM SOUTH CAROLINA AND SHE HOPES THAT FLAG IS NOT THERE. I hope if the flag is still up she DONT PERFORM THERE

    • The belief & systemic actions DO exist?, but….the actually “supremacy”?….HAYiiiiiiiil naaaaaw! And after all this reDIC behavior & exposure of pure “inferiority/insecurity” complexes?….no one but aNOTHER fkn idiot would continue to believe that “they” ARE in ANY way, the….”supreme”. Aaaaaaand? “scene”.

  8. I guess Serena is just as ignorant of historical facts as the majority of America seems to be.

  9. Thank You Serena for standing up for what is right – For African Americans – The flag represents only “Evil” 🙁

  10. Fuck yall dumb ass niggas crying over a dumb ass flag and supporting sum dumb ass tennis player, im just here to fuck somebodys wife, LONG DICK STYLE

    • As Forrest Gump said: Stupid is as stupid does.” You exemplify that. If it wasn’t for “niggas” , there would not have been a United States because we “niggas” built this country while the “fuck-fathers” sat back on their ass believing they were entitled to manifest some damn destiny. But they couldn’t do so in England, so had to come here, take what didn’t belong to them, and claim they have a right to it, then have the nerve to call it “our country”! Sounds like a serious case of schizophrenia to me.

  11. WOW!!! Instead of commending her for her stance against hatred! People have the condemn her for it. Yet how many of you stood up and stood behind the LGBT community and the Supreme’s decision for equality…but we’re so quick to ridicule her and her stance.
That’s half our problem, we’re not accountable for anything (past, present or future) and we don’t unite and stand up for everyone.

    • Ok….understand this….I & MANY others on this site, DO stand up for your’s & other groups, ahiiiiiiight?! So understand “that”, while I post…”this”! It is extreeeeeemely insensitive, incorrect & unaPLIcable, for “you” or ANYone else to “EQUATE” your groups strife with….Ours! A “civil rights” issue?, yes BUT….it ain’t eeeeeevn the same. And if you were soooo fkn objective sensitive & “liberal”?, you wouldn’t even drrrrrrREAM of equating the two, nor asking that BS question. Now….question fuh YO ass…..”how many of “yall” have stood up fuh….”Us”??!! See….we ain’t seen yall til “yall” had an issue, & used “OUR” struggle as a measuring stick for…”your’s”. And again?….the shyt don’t work! See?….while you don’t have to reveal your lifestyle & “then” be discriminated against?, “THERE IS NO ESCAPE HATCH FOR …”BLACKNESS”!!! Not to say in ANY way yall “shouuuuuld” be discriminated against, ahiiiiight?, but AGAIN!!….it ain’t the same. And even “now”, after yall HAVE achieved & recieved your goal?, let’s “now” see ANY of “YALL” “pick up the “Black” banner”, & carry DAT shyt! I predict?, ALL yall will “jump off the bus” & CONTINUE to watch Us ride this bytch….alone as ALways. JUST as all the so called “Women’s” groups do, when there’s an issue benefitting …women of “COLOR”!! See….those bytches only stand up for “THEIR” own, also! And BTW?….out of ALL the ethnic groups or any OTHER?, “We/BLACK” people are THE most open & inclusive of others!! We invite EVERYONE to Our “parties”!! (Even though it may be to Our DISadvantage!!!) And so…b4 you bring ANY of that self serving, finger pointing, guilt duckin transference ovva hurr?, look in YO mirror, recognize the facts, history AND “present”!!, then retract that BS you came with & …STFU. TJBT! Ps..& if some of yall were as objective, progressive & PROactive as the “NON” racist Whites of old?, it wouldn’t have taken this long for either ONE of Our ppl’s …”time to come”. “BOOM”!

    • Ps…always keep in mind?, that…Black’s are NOT “monolithic”! And so…the Blackness the White media chooses to show?, “isn’t always an “accurate” depiction OF, my ppl’s actions OR….”Blackness”. Chuuuuuch!

  12. She never had a problem before coming to SC & collecting $$$—good do NOT come back again in the future. This hatred is never going to end because some people choose to never let it go. The fact is the confederate war happened & it is part of the past.

  13. Proud she stood up for what she believes in but at the time would she not play where the black panthers are or where the blacks are rioting. Sadly not. Just think whats the difference in which side is showing racism and hate. The flag isnt for neither. Their were white slaves too. So really it should be poor agaisnt the rich but really the ones encouraging all of this is the rich so maybe the rest of us should step back and look at this from another perspective. Maybe whites and blacks should be walking together to say no more. I think martin luther would agree

  14. Flags don’t breed hate, people breed hate! Shameful people to try and stomp on someone’s rights to express themselves. I am from Virginia and no matter what Robert E. Lee used the flag for it will always be my battle flag! This flag may have been used durning a period of slavery but this flag was not even the flag that defined the people from the south. I will wave my flag proudly and pray for those who are breeding hate because the flag is not alive and there for cant hate, thats mans doing. Open your eyes people. Pick up a book and read about this flag and stop listening to the stupid ignorant people fueling your minds with hate and be abovr the influence. We as Americans should be smarter than this.

  15. When racist organizations use the Confederate flag as their symbol, it negates the sentiment of those who support the flag as a symbol of southern pride. Perhaps it is time for the KKK and other racist groups to adopt another flag to symbolize their organization, and not disrespect southerners whom have a true belief in southern pride. This simple step would stop the madness, and it would separate the wheat from the chaff.

  16. To Heather Remmington: If you forget the past, you are bound to repeat it. Also, this country has never apologize to us for the atrocities committed against us. People who want to forget the past are the one who don’t want to take responsibility for their actions, and know deep down they were wrong, but people who feel entitled never think they are wrong. And it’s ironic how racist (I’m not saying you are) can call themselves Christians, yet burn churches, or better yet, masacre people in a church. The reason why this country is in a bad shape and loosing its status in the world’s view is because of the sins of the father, and the things that have been done to Blacks, Hispanics, and Indiana that have not been atoned for. Please think about that.
