*Minutes after Larry Wilmore roasted Don Lemon on “The Nightly Show,” guest panelist Joe Morton was requested to address the topic of the night – the Confederate flag – as his delightfully-terrifying character on ABC’s “Scandal.”
Morton looked into the camera as Elijah Pope, the father of Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope, and delivered an EPIC verbal beatdown for the ages.
The actor directly addressed viewers who defend the flag as a symbol of southern heritage, while overlooking the preservation of slavery and racism that the “stars and bars” actually stood for.
“You. Are. A bigot,” Morton said in Papa Pope’s trademark cadence. “I. Am. A black man. I have worked and scraped for every inch of dirt I walk on. You cried yourself to sleep because Lincoln hurt your feelings. You backwoods, sheet wearing, cross burning, honky mother f**kers.”
