Stan Sheppard: ‘The U.S. National Anthem’ … Salute What? Who?

*In doing some research for a project I was working on, I happened to come across some “extremely interesting information” that I feel all Americans, especially Black Americans, should know about.

If you are a Black person reading this, I’d like to be in the room with you to see the look on your face when you digest the facts given below.

Ok, here we go.

The “STAR SPANGLED BANNER” (U.S. National Anthem) was written by “Mr. Francis Scott Key” in 1814, while he was being held captive on a British vessel while the British Fleet bombarded Fort McHenry, in Baltimore.

When the bombing was over, Francis Scott Key saw the American flag still waving over the fort, and feeling so inspired, he went on to write the “Star Spangled Banner”, which went on to become our nation’s national anthem.

Well, here are the “facts” surrounding the lovely author of this document:

1. “Francis Scott Key” was a U.S. Attorney for Washington D.C., and he was an “inside member of President Andrew Jackson’s Kitchen Cabinet”.

2. “Francis Scott Key” wrote “four verses” to the National Anthem, but we were only informed about the first “two verses”.

3. In the “third and fourth verses”, he speaks of “Hirelings”,
(Slaves) and how they should try to come to “our side to try to win their freedom”.

4. He also makes references to “The foul footsteps of the Slaves”.

5. He was also responsible for “Starting the first race riot in the nation’s capital in 1835 called, “The Snow Riot”.

6. The “Snow Riot” was started because Mr. Key “targeted and prosecuted an “Abolitionist”, which was a person who was dedicated to “ending Slavery”, for “possessing materials speaking on the subject”.

Now, usually I would have a closing paragraph to my article, but I truly feel that I should end this right here. Therefore, leaving you to ponder the information I have shared with you this day, allowing you to draw your own conclusions.

Thank you and God bless.
