Hypocrite or Business? John Legend Accepts $300k for Hotel Gig

john-legend*John Legend’s boycott of the Beverly Hills Hotel looks to be a thing of the past as the singer performed at a wedding reception held at the venue in May.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legend’s performance on May 30 took place in the hotel ballroom for the wedding reception of Daniel Landy and Alexandra Lippman. Lippman is the daughter of L.A. commercial realtor Jim Lippman. Legend’s appearance at the reception was confirmed via Instagrams, which captured him singing his hit song “All of Me.”

A source revealed to the Reporter that the entertainer sang two songs and received about $300,000.

Legend’s performance at the Beverly Hills Hotel comes months after he backed out of a appearing at a party in February that Los Angeles Confidential hosted at the venue to celebrate him being on the magazine’s cover.

The reason behind Legend’s boycott, which started in early 2014, stemmed from the hotel’s owner, the Sultan of Brunei, passing Sharia law in his country. The Reporter notes the law called for the stoning of gays and adulterers while mentioning Legend’s rep, who stated that the vocalist backed out of the party because her client didn’t agree with the Sultan’s “horrific” laws.

“These policies, which among other things could permit women and LGBT Bruneians to be stoned to death, are heinous and certainly don’t represent John’s values or the spirit of the event. John does not, in any way, wish to further enrich the Sultan while he continues to enforce these brutal laws,” the rep said.

The L.A. Confidential party was supposed to be the first major entertainment industry event held at the hotel amid the boycott. In addition to celebrating Legend’s cover, the Feb. 5 party would’ve acknowledged the music man’s good fortune during awards season, which included him picking up a best original song Oscar with Common for “Glory.”

Responding to inquiries about Legend’s appearance, the singer’s reps have been silent while a Beverly Hills Hotel rep responded to the Reporter saying, “We never comment on private events.”
