Rev. Run Reveals Origins of Run DMC’s Signature Style (Watch)

run dmc,*Run DMC is one of hip-hop’s most influential acts of all time. And they are still influencing to this day. Rev. Run shared why the group’s signature style works, according to Hot 97.

“We found Jam Master Jay in Hollis and I said, ‘Hey, me and this dude Darryl, we got a record company and we want you to be the DJ,’ and Jay was like, ‘I got you, Run. I got you,’” Run said.

He added, “that early gangsta came from Jay. He had the hat, leather suit. He’s there [with] no shoe strings, with the glasses poked out; Real B-Boy.  So we kinda formed our look behind Jay.”

He revealed the group didn’t let stylists dress them and they weren’t worried about what people thought about their look. Nevertheless, they became trendsetters and iconically influenced hip-hop style.

“Whatever we were wearing in Hollis that morning, is what we wore on stage that night. We weren’t trying to follow what we thought was acceptable; we were saying, ‘This is acceptable,’” he said.

Run credits the group’s success to never changing their style and staying true to who they are — creating authentic hip-hop.

“Where people still mess up sometimes is that they let people that are outside of what they do, control what they do. When you don’t do what you want to do, you end up compromising the vision,” he said. “When you give that power away, you lose what you really are. So I’ve never given that power away.”
