Rachel Dolezal Once Sued Howard U for Racial Discrimination

rachel_dolezal*As if we didn’t have enough to digest with Rachel Dolezal.

Now comes news of the former NAACP Spokane, Washington president bringing a racial discrimination lawsuit against her alma mater, Howard University, years ago.

The Smoking Gun reports Dolezal filed the suit against the school in 2002 under her surname Moore. In the suit, she accuses Howard of denying her a teaching post and access to scholarship assistance based on the color of her skin. At the time, Dolezal was living life as a white woman and graduated from Howard with a Masters of Fine Arts degree.

Dolezal’s lawsuit goes on to claim that Howard was “permeated with discriminatory intimidation, ridicule, and insult,” according to the Smoking Gun, which noted another accusation from Dolezal involving the university’s preferential treatment to African-American students. That claim stemmed from some of her artwork being removed from a 2001 student exhibition.

Ultimately, Dolezal’s lawsuit was tossed out by a judge after he found no evidence that she was a victim racial discrimination. The judge’s ruling was later upheld by the D.C. Court of Appeals, Smoking Gun notes. As a result, Dolezal was ordered to reimburse Howard University $2,728.50 in legal costs.

News of Dolezal’s racial discrimination lawsuit comes after she resigned as the Spokane NAACP president on Monday (June 15) following criticism she received after being outed for being a white woman who claimed to be back.

In a statement following her resignation, Dolezal thanked the civil rights organization “for their unwavering support of my leadership through this unexpected firestorm.”

“Please know I will never stop fighting for human rights,” she wrote on Facebook, “and will do everything in my power to help and assist, whether it means stepping up or stepping down, because this is not about me. It’s about justice.”
