Nichelle Nichols Admits Being ‘Wild and Woolly’ As Ever After Stroke

Nichelle-Nichols*She may have had a health scare with a recent stroke, but Nichelle Nichols says she is doing great and feeling pretty good.

Chatting with “Entertainment Tonight“’s “Nischelle Turner at her home, the 82-year-old actress confessed her stroke has not slowed her down at all as she assured fans that she is alright.

“I am feeling the best that I felt in a very long time,” a smiling Nichols told Turner while adding that she has no loss of mobility in the wake of her stroke. To hear her tell it, “I am as wild and woolly as I have ever been.”

Nichol’s comments come less than two weeks after she was rushed to the hospital after suffering a mild stroke on June 3. During her hospital stay, Nichols, who is best known for playing Lt. Uhura on the original “Star Trek” series and six of the film adaptations of the classic show, underwent testing to determine the severity of the incident.

According to “ET,” Nichols began an inpatient rehabilitation and recovery program two days later.

In her interview, the groundbreaking entertainer went on to reveal how she was able to get past her stroke, saying it all came from using a coping technique she learned from her parents.

“Things I can’t deal with and have no say over, I deny them,” Nichols shared with “ET.” “And strangely enough most times they go away. So this was one of those times.”

Although denial worked for her, Nichols confessed that simply denying something won’t always work. In her opinion, sometimes you have to fight hard to get past obstacles.

“Yeah, I am a fighter,” Nichols said. “Don’t be messing with my game. My game is my career.”

In addition to her health Nichols touched on the death of her “Star Trek” co-star and close friend Leonard Nimoy, who died from complications due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in February.

To cope with the passing, Nichols stated that she dealt with it the same way she dealt with her own illness.

“When I got the news that Leonard was gone, I denied it and I was able to survive,” Nichols recalled. “We were always in touch. [But] you know, I didn’t even know he was ill.”
