‘Spy’ Tops Weekend Box Office That Shows No Signs Of Improvement

spy-melissa-mccarthy*Melissa McCarthy’s “Spy” may own this weekend’s box office with being the top film, but things aren’t so rosy overall as moviegoers aren’t turning out as much they did in years past.

Although film such as “Furious 7,” ” Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Perfect Pitch 2” and “San Andreas” are posting blockbuster results, the folks at Shadow and Act note that, so far, overall ticket sales are 13% lower than they were last summer.

While the box office for films typically drop-off on the second weekend of release, it’s been especially noticeable this year so far with a larger than usual decline at 55% on average overall, according to one estimate. Despite this, “Pitch Perfect 2” and “Fury Road” have been the exception with much smaller drop-offs.

As for this past weekend, “Spy” is the number one film in the land with $30 million made, a total that fell short of advance predictions. With McCarthy’s shtick” of being the “loud, abrasive, foul mouthed, take no prisoners woman who cuts any detractor down to size” on the big screen, Shadow and Act guesses that this may be the reason for turning in less than stellar results, despite fans who may enjoy her “aggressive” onscreen persona.

“But eventually people will tire of it, and she’s going to have to stretch out. But will her audience follow her?” the site questioned while mentioning the mixed box office predictions for “Entourage,” which clocked in at #4 with just $17.8 million made.

The #3 film at the box office was the horror film “Insidious Chapter 3,” with $23 million collected this weekend. Although it fell in the middle of its two predecessors, “Chapter 3” looks to turn in a healthy profit with doubling its $10 million budget. Last week’s #1 film, “San Andreas,” experienced a more than 50%, drop, but managed to capture the #2 spot with $26 million. “Fury Road rounds out the top five with $130 million.

While the situation may seem bleak, things could turn around in July and July as box office analysts predict that highly-anticipated films like “Jurassic World,” Pixar’s “Inside Out,” Universal’s “Despicable Me” spin-off, “Minions;” and “Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation” bringing in high money-making expectations to go with advance reviews and all-out promotion. The word on “Jurassic World” is that it’s expected to clear more than $100 million this coming weekend when it opens Friday (June 12).
