Brandy Wants a 2016 Filled With ‘The Wiz’ and Coldplay

brandy-norwood*With her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in the Tony Award-winning musical “Chicago” coming to an end in less than a month, Brandy Norwood is looking ahead to 2016.

At the top of the actress-singer’s wish list is a starring role as Dorothy in the upcoming Broadway revival of the classic musical “The Wiz.” The play is set for a serious comeback in the coming months as NBC plans to air it as the third in its series of live musical events on Dec. 3. The TV airing of “The Wiz” will follow a
2016-2017 Broadway revival of the production.

“My dream is to reopen ‘The Wiz’ on Broadway. That is a dream role for me,” Brandy confessed during an interview with The Huffington Post. “It’s just something that I really want to experience: being Dorothy on Broadway. I’ve been putting it out there. So I think the word is getting out that’s something I would really like to do.”

Brandy’s desire to star in “The Wiz” comes after NBC announced earlier this month that Stephanie Mills would play Auntie Em in its live broadcast of the musical. Mills is noted for originating the role of Dorothy in the initial Broadway run of “The Wiz.”

Despite the inclusion of Mills, the network has yet to cast the lead role, something that Brandy is well aware of with her determination to be in the play. The entertainer’s 8-week stint in “Chicago” ends on June 21.

“I think the next steps is seeing what they end up doing with it,” she said in reference to NBC’s future casting plans. “I don’t know what the connection in terms of NBC and Broadway and how it all connects. But for Broadway that’s something that I would love to do.”

While she’s keeping her theater card open for “The Wiz,” Brandy’ is closing the book on her time on BET’s “The Game,” which returns for its final season in July.

In addition, Brandy will remain busy as she preps to get back in the studio to record her next album. To hear the 36-year-old vocalist tell it, the currently untitled project will arrive in 2016 and be very personal.

“I have so much to give, and I’m so inspired right now in my life. I have so much I need to sing about and get off my chest,” Brandy told the Post about what she says is “definitely going to be the right project..” “It’s really going to be a beautiful album. This next one is going to be very special.”

To make the album more special, Brandy voiced her interest in working with the British rock band Coldplay. The Chris Martin-fronted group is one of Brandy’s favorite bands.

“I would love to collaborate with Coldplay! I think that would be so magical,” said Brandy, who recorded a song called “Coldplay” for her 2004 album “Afrodisiac” and recorded a cover of the band’s single, “Magic” last year. “I think people would love that. It would be unexpected at the same time expected because everybody knows how much of a fan I am of Coldplay. So that’s a great idea. I’m going to look into that.”
