Pres. Obama Breaks Guinness World Record with New Twitter Account

Pres-Barack-Obama*President Barack Obama hasn’t had his own Twitter account that long, but he’s already making his presence known.

On Monday (May 18), the commander-in-chief broke the Guinness world record for the “fastest time to reach 1 million followers on Twitter,” the Huffington Post reports.

According to Guinness World Records, Obama’s Twitter account, @POTUS, scored 1 million followers within five hours of its launch. The account, which will be given to the next president in 2016, includes exclusive tweets from the current president.

Prior to Obama, the record was held by “Avengers: Age of Ultron” star Robert Downey Jr., who reached the 1 million follower mark in a little less than 24 hours after joining Twitter in April 2014.

Although he reached 1 million Twitter followers in record time, Obama has work to do to break the record for the most followers. The Post notes that singer Katy Perry is the one to beat since she currently holds the record for the most Twitter followers at almost 70 million.

Following her is another vocalist, Justin Bieber, who comes in second with 64 million follower. Coming in third is Obama’s other Twitter account, @BarackObama, which is run by Organizing for Action staff and boasts 59.3 million followers.
