Parker Sawyers to Play Obama Opposite Tika Sumpter’s Michelle in ‘Southside With You’

*The romantic dramedy “Southside With You,” inspired by Barack and Michelle Obama’s first date, has finally found an actor to play the young, future president.

IM Global and producers Bob Teitel, Tika Sumpter and director Richard Tanne cast Parker Sawyers in the role, with Sumper set to play Michelle, according to

As previously reported, the film covers the eventful date in 1989 when a young associate named Barack Obama was trying to woo lawyer Michelle Robinson on a summer afternoon and evening, that took them from the Art Institute of Chicago to a screening of Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing,” to their first kiss outside of an ice cream parlor.

Tanne penned the script. Cameras are set to begin rolling in Chicago in August.

  1. Ok for the “dramedy”. But….when they get “serious”?, they MUST cast…”H.Lennox” !!!! Chuuuuuuch!

  2. I grew up with Harry. He is from Chicago. And you are right! He’d be the perfect choice for a major motion picture role of Obama.

    • Thanks Susan: There is/was a Parker Sawyers from Indianapolis about the same age. His grand dad was a famous jazz saxophonist there. Ironic that both have a very unique name. Thanks again, Fanteeking,Cape Coast, Ghana

        • Wow!!! So interesting!! I taught Parker Sawyers during an experimental science project at North VIew Middle school back in the day sponsored by IU/Bloomington in the late 90s.. I played football with his Dad the late James Sawyersr at Attucks. I know your Dad Walter Hart and adored his Mother who passed recently at 102. A GREAT Lady!! I have a copy of your poetry you wrote as a child and recently published a book that chronicles the greatness of Indianapolis Jazz giants including you Granddad. It’s called Indianapolis Jazz: Masters, Legends and Legacy of Indiana Avenue. See, I’m over here in Ghana talking to you across the Middle Passage. I talked to your Mom years ago during my research and was told Parker is living far away. I know the place, but will keep it close to my vest. Fanteeking, Cape Coast
