HBO, Showtime Box Out Free Streaming Sites over Mayweather vs. Pacquiao

hbo, showtime,*Just days before the big fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather HBO and Showtime are in a legal battle to stop piracy sites from streaming.

The cable movie channels joined forces in copyright infringement against piracy sites like boxinghd.net and sportship.org to prevent them from offering free streaming of the Pay Per View boxing event.

The channels teamed up with Mayweather Promotions, LLC and Top Rank, Inc. and filed a restraining order against piracy and to shut down piracy sites until the end of the fight, at least, according to Deadline.

Read the document of the complaint below:

“Defendants’ anticipated infringement not only denies Plaintiffs the benefits of their exclusive rights in the Coverage granted by the Copyright Act, but it threatens to irreparably harm Plaintiffs’ valuable relationships with their authorized television carriers and with consumers,” say the highly illustrated 41-page filing in federal court.”

“Defendants’ infringing stream also threatens to damage Plaintiffs’ reputation with consumers, as Plaintiffs cannot exercise any quality control over Defendants’ stream, which may be of inferior quality, subject to technical problems, and may suffer from other quality problems that consumers will mistakenly associate with Plaintiffs.”
