*Mo’Nique is certainly “playing the game” when it comes to her new film “Blackbird,” opening this weekend.
On Thursday, she visited Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live” and Larry Wilmore’s “The Nightly Show” on Comedy Central in support of the movie. On Friday, she continued plugging away on NY radio show The Breakfast Club.
But the appearances also gave some of the outlets a fresh opportunity to discuss the dustup with her “Precious” director and dear friend Lee Daniels. Last month, Mo’Nique said that the “Empire” writer and executive producer offered her the role of Cookie Lyon first, but the network said no. Mo’Nique said that Daniels told her she had been blackballed by Hollywood because she “did not play the game.”
Earlier this week, Mo’ visited the radio show Sway in the Morning looking to settle the controversy once and for all. She produced printed-out emails that appeared to confirm the attempts of Lee Daniels to cast her as Cookie before the network overruled and went with Taraji P. Henson.
On The Breakfast Club, Mo’Nique talked more about “Empire,” her relationship with Daniels and being labeled difficult in Hollywood.
On “Watch What Happens Live,” a caller again asked her to explain being blackballed from “Empire.”
On “The Nightly Show,” which has guests participating in hot topic discussions (not plugging their latest project), Mo’Nique was part of a panel discussing teacher-student sex.
