The Jones Family Singers is a fast-rising Gospel group blowing fans away with their music and a new documentary film, “The Jones Family Will Make A Way.”

Austin, TX Texas gospel sensation, The Jones Family Singers, moved SXSW audiences with their story of faith and perseverance.  The film, called “The Jones Family will Make a Way,” highlights the 30-year-old group’s traditional Gospel roots and chronicles their efforts to share their message with a broad audience without compromising their values, premiered Wednesday as part of SXSW’s 24 Beats Per Second music documentary section.

Director Alan Berg, his production team from Arts+Labor and the Jones Family were there for the emotional event.

Alan offered, “Twenty years ago my pastor said we need to stop rubbing against each other like so many shards of broken glass, intent only on seeing how much blood we can draw, and instead look for ways in which we can lift each other up. This movie personifies that — people from far different backgrounds working together to fully realize their God-given talents.

“The Jones Family Will Make A Way”The Jones Family consists in part of five sisters, two brothers and their father. Their story began in a little church in the tiny town of Markham, TX, where Bishop Fred Allen Jones, Sr. has been preaching for more than 30 years.  When the Bishop met a jaded rock critic named Michael Corcoran, neither of them could have anticipated how it would change each of their lives.  Over the years, Corcoran helped the group make musical connections they hadn’t had before, saying, “They’re on a mission to tell people about the Lord, and I’m on a mission to tell people about the Jones Family Singers.”

The Bishop and the non-Christian Corcoran don’t always see eye to eye about the band’s message, with the critic sometimes pushing the group to dial-back on the preaching, but the band’s message has always remained front and center, no matter the venue. “We’re just church people doin’ what we do,” Bishop Jones says in the film.

Over the years, the band’s message hasn’t changed, but their audience has certainly grown. In the film, their journey culminates with a New York debut at the prestigious Lincoln Center.   The band’s relationship with Corcoran has blossomed as well: he may not share their unshakable faith, but he says, “whenever I hear the Jones Family play, I know God’s real.”

The Jones Family will take their funk-influenced Gospel sound to the Newport Folk Festival, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Playboy Jazz Festival over the next few months. “The Jones Family Will Make a Way” will next show at the Dallas International Film Festival on April 11th  and 12th.

The Jones Family Singers, consisting in part of five sisters, two brothers and their father, have been tearing up churches and festivals alike for over two decades. But they’ve never before made a studio album that displays the depth of their pure musical gifts quite like “The Spirit Speaks,” recorded to analog tape at Jim Eno’s Public Hi-Fi studio in Austin, TX and released on April 1st, 2014 via Arts+Labor.

The Jones Family Singers received a standing ovation at Lincoln Center this past summer, and showcased at New York City’s globalFEST and The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in January 2015.  This year and next will see them criss-crossing the globe with domestic and international appearances including Newport Folk Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and a two week tour of Russia.

Impressed by the band’s fervor onstage and humility off, Austin filmmaker Alan Berg (“Outside Industry: The Story of SXSW”) decided in 2012 to make a documentary that explored the triumphs and tribulations of this working gospel band. The artistry he witnessed onstage along with the compelling family dynamic will come to fruition at film festivals beginning in Spring 2015.

Buoyed by the new LP and critical acclaim, the Jones Family Singers are eager to hit the road. Besides churches, nightclubs, concert series and music festivals, they’ve also brought their powerful musical ministry to prisons, interfaith events and community celebrations.
