Noose Found Hanging from Tree at Duke University

Published

on

*A noose was found hanging from a tree near the student union at Duke University on Wednesday.

The Washington Post reports that the school has been mired in racial tensions in recent days after a black student reported being taunted by a white student with a racist chant about the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and lynching.

Social media was rife with disgust Wednesday morning — and also some skepticism that the act could’ve been related to April Fool’s Day or Final Four rivalries.

The noose was found about 2 a.m. in the Bryan Center Plaza, in the shadow of the school’s iconic chapel.

Larry Moneta, Duke’s vice president for student affairs, sent an e-mail to students Wednesday morning:

“To whomever committed this hateful and stupid act, I just want to say that if your intent was to create fear, it will have the opposite effect. Today, fear will be among the reactions students, and especially, students of color, will have. Be assured that the Duke community will provide all the support necessary to help us all get through this. In time, each of these cowardly acts of bias and hatred will strengthen our resolve to love and support each other.

“Appropriate investigations are underway and if we’re able to identify anyone responsible for committing this act of intimidation, they will be held fully accountable.”

A forum will be held at 5 p.m. on the steps of Duke Chapel to talk about the incident. Richard Brodhead, president of the university, and Provost Sally Kornbluth will speak, along with faculty and student leaders.

A photo of the noose, apparently made of yellow rope and hanging near outdoor tables and chairs, was posted on the tumblr site of the group People of Color Caucus, with this statement

“To all black students, staff, faculty, and/or Durhamites on campus and in the area: Please take care of yourselves and each other. This campus is not a safe space, and has proven beyond any doubt that it is a hostile environment for any and all black people.”

Really Bianca? Anything to defend racist antics, eh? Please GTFOH…

There are plenty of genuinely horrible acts against black people in this nation, and for you to surreptitiously suggest that black people could have “manufactured” the drama with the noose is completely ridiculous.

I would venture a guess that black people are completely exhausted by the wanton hate against our people. This crap is NOT fun and games. Real people are being killed and maimed by white supremacists who think they have some privileged right to do whatever they please to black people.

I’m curious as to what motivated you to post your juvenile statement, “Anyone could have done this.” What on earth are you suggesting?

Black people are under serious attack by domestic terrorists in this nation, and for what? Because white supremacists never learned or accepted the fact that black people are stakeholders in this nation like everyone else. The greedy, selfish swines never learned how to share, and it’s a damn shame.

I’m sick of people making excuses for racist and their barbaric antics. We must call out this BS EVERY TIME someone tries to intimidate black people, or make excuses for racist acts…

Eff all of you apologists for white supremacists… Now, bark dog…

Stephen Challenges President Barack Obama To A Game Of “Wastepaper Basketball” – The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (Nov 24, 2020)

*President Barack Obama was in full “That’s what I do”-style trash talk mode when Stephen Colbert challenged him to a game of “wastepaper basketball” during his appearance Wednesday on “The Late Show.”

Colbert waited until Part 3 of the interview to ask #44 if he wanted to play, then had the nerve to ask Obama if he needed to warm up with some practice shots.

“I Don’t Need Practice Shots. Against You?,” Obama responded. When Colbert suggested they wager on the outcome, with Obama having to mention the host in his next book if he loses, Obama asked, “Well what if I win?”

“What do you want?” Colbert asked.

Obama shrugged off the whole prospect, saying, “Nobody’s gonna read your book anyway.” He then added, “It doesn’t matter, I’m not gonna lose.”

Colbert said he would donate to Obama’s library if he loses. And with that, the game commenced.

Obama was “crushed” by Colbert, 8 to zero.

“That’s what I do!” Colbert yelled mid-thrashing.

*Scotland aims to end ‘period poverty’ by becoming the first country to offer free menstrual products in public facilities.

On Tuesday, the Scottish Parliament voted unanimously in favor of the Period Products bill, CNN reports. Women across Scotland will now have universal access to products such as tampons and pads in public buildings, including schools and universities.

“The campaign has been backed by a wide coalition, including trades unions, women’s organisations and charities,” Monica Lennon, the lawmaker who introduced the bill last year, said ahead of the vote. “Scotland will not be the last country to make period poverty history.”

After the vote, Lennon said the decision was “a signal to the world that free universal access to period products can be achieved.”

Here;s more from CNN:

The bill’s accompanying financial memorandum estimates it could cost around £8.7 million a year by 2022, depending on the number of women who will take advantage of the free products.

The new law was praised by a number of equality and women’s rights groups as well as politicians from across the parties represented in the Scottish Parliament.

“Proud to vote for this groundbreaking legislation, making Scotland the first country in the world to provide free period products for all who need them. An important policy for women and girls,” Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on her official Twitter page after the vote.

Local authorities and education providers across Scottland will be required to ensure that menstrual products are available for free.

Last year, England and New Zealand launched initiatives to provide free sanitary products in schools.
