*In the midst of a sea of motivational speakers and brands, Steve Harvey’s Act Like A Success Conference was a massive Cruiseliner gliding across the waves.

If motivational speaking was housed in a department store,  I imagine Steve Harvey Act Like A Success Motivational aisle would be stocked with gut- wrenching humor,  faith- inspired transformation, tough –love, and good –ole fashion- down-south, ummm-hmmm preaching. Each aisle would offer gift-inspiring life lessons to motivate, encourage, and stimulate success- with its very own disclaimer: No Free Hustle Here!! The gift is free, but the hustle is sold separately.

Steve Harvey launched his first-ever “Act Like A Success Conference” on March 6-8 at the Hyatt Regency Reston in Reston, Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC.  The three-day event based on Harvey’s latest book “Act Like A Success, Think Like A Success,” will offer attendees the opportunity to obtain the tools, strategies, motivation and insights to accelerate success and make big dreams a reality.  Amongst the crowd of conference goers, I had the good fortune to spend the weekend soaking up platitudes and inspirational speakers such as Doreen Rainey, Patrice Washington, Dr. Laura Berman, Lisa Nichols, Heather Thomson and Paul C. Brunson. Each speaker offered a unique blend of thought provoking, positive, and practical applications to kick start ones journey to accelerate success and tap into your God-given gifts.

Truth be told, I’ve been to my share of retreats and motivational speaking conferences— church retreats, women’s retreats, marital retreats, silent retreats — and I’ve liked most of them. I have cried appropriately or offered the necessary “PREACH” at a TD Jakes event. I pumped my fist in the air tirelessly last September at Oprah’s the Life You Want Weekend- in sky high pumps that made my podiatrist issue a restraining order to Jimmy Choo.  I am also the kind of person has an emergency stash of self-help books and creates vision boards every few years.  I welcome the worksheets, the quotes and practical aids that help me on my journey to be a dynamic, balanced, and successful mother , journalist, entrepreneur, aunt, girlfriend, and all the other roles that I take on in my everyday life.  So- motivational conferences are like the occasional clam bake for me.  But this conference…… was different.

The weekend was filled with a myriad of the standard breakout sessions and obligatory gift bags and sponsor tables. Side note– I thought some of the vendors could have been more connected to the messaging. It took me 15 minutes to make the connection between my would be gift and hustle and Infuionsoft. But as each speaker took the stage, the intergenerational crowd of mostly women went wild, and a woman seated directly behind me excitedly shouted: “I’m trying to get where I want to be!”  It was as if we were at the Superbowl during half time, huddled in the locker room, and reviewing what would be the winning plays with our exuberant Coach Steve.

As Steve took the stage, his message and delivery, was altogether Steve. Draped in laughter, we listened and learned about the importance of connecting and understanding our gift-  because it is that gift that unleashes a life of joy, peace and prosperity. So, through a myriad of humor filled recollections of his battles with poverty, failure and defeat, we embark on a journey with Steve to better understand SUCCESS. Not his SUCCESSS- that was the backdrop- but the Success that is meant for each of us uniquely.

Steve reminded us that the core elements of our SUCCESS centered on three words- ASK. BELIEVE.RECEIVE. With stories of his early beginnings in comedy to his homelessness- I connected to him in a very genuine way. I didn’t expect, nor need, Deepak Chopra to appear to discuss my inner healing. By the Grace of God, I have never lived in my car- but it did not matter. I understood the common language of facing adversity and overcoming those hurdles. Steve’s humorous, simplistic, but no-nonsense, delivery was all at once- authentic, believable, real, painful, inspiring, empowering –  and stirring.  After all, who else but Steve Harvey can seamlessly  recall purchasing a $200,000 Rolls Royce as a birthday gift, to the adventures of stealing gas when he was living out of his car for three years, to the effectiveness of using curse words as adjectives—and it all made perfect sense.

That’s the thing about the experience I had at the conference. It’s only partially about what the speakers say. It’s also about the hard-to-define feeling that sweeps over a music concert when the crowd is in sync with the performers and everyone is yelling the same lyrics at the same time. It’s about transcendence. Steve created that, and the conference found ways  to share these bits of wisdom through his  testimony.  Everyone in the room must have been at least somewhat familiar with the themes of vision boards, faith, and resilience — but by revealing just a bit more of himself, Steve made his life story feel like a revelation.

During the post-event press conference, shortly after his off-color joke about Cialis commercials- which I found hilariously true, Steve spoke candidly about his lowest moments. How he wanted to convey his journey to help each person understand that all things are possible through humor, preparation, and by following your true passion. Even my most cynical, easy-enough for you to say Mr. Rolls-Royce voice was stifled – because I believed him – fully and effortlessly.

So now what? Do we grab a few margaritas and organize the conference aids? Do we pick up a hearty supply of Hustle on aisle 3? Do we get our second- wind and revamp our last vision board? Yes. Yes. And Yes.

The Act Like A Success movement is a healthy dash of “Reinvention” and heavy dollop of Reality. It’s a juxtaposition of two extremes- the NOW and the what’s TO COME—a motherly hug and tough love “get it together” phone call from your best friend all rolled up into one. Beyond its annual conference and ongoing courses via its SUCCESS INSTITUTE,  Act Like  A Success is very much about finding  you. Being that best you- hustling, focused, resilient, empowered, and faithful;  fully navigating the waters of your destiny with the wisdom of our very own Captain Steve.
