*By definition to empower is to give a person strength and confidence to manage their life. The UNCF “Empower Me” tour has been doing just that for tens of thousands of college students during the many years it’s been crisscrossing the country.

The free, traveling college and career-readiness road show ended a seventh year on Saturday (March 21) on the campus of Laney College in Oakland, California.  As a host “Soul Food” TV star Darrin Dewitt Henson brought knowledge to the campus.

“We got to speak to people one on one. We got to talk with them and we got to hear what their desires are and how we can best serve the community,” the celebrated “Stomp the Yard” actor and choreographer said.

The Tour created in partnership with Wells Fargo featured an Empower Me Zone – a place where students engaged with college recruiters and learned about scholarship opportunities. There were also exhibits, college and career workshops, and engaging panel discussions.

Henson, a MTV Video Music Award winner and NAACP Image Award nominee, feels strongly about being a part of this worthwhile endeavor – explaining that he cares about the goals of UNCF (United Negro College Fund.)

“I care about education. I care about the future of our people.  This country is the greatest country in the world. We have the ability to become whatever we want to become and I use my voice.  I wanted to join with UNCF because of the work that they have done in the past and the work that they’re doing now and the work that they’re building and creating for the future.”

Where are all the single ladies? Even though the Bronx, New York native tied the knot a year ago this month to beautiful Rachelle – “Single Ladies” is on his mind because he has a recurring role on the Centric cable network comedy drama starring actress LisaRaye McCoy-Misick and singer LeToya Luckett, among others.

“We had a great night on the premiere episode (March 18 at 10 p.m. ET),” Henson declared.  “I play a detective – Detective Jordan on the new “Single Ladies” fourth season.  I’m really excited to be back on the small screen (and) enjoying this rollercoaster ride.”

The new season of “SL” began with a bang.  Keisha Greene (McCoy-Misick) was arrested. Her best friend Raquel (Denise Vasi) is dead. What will we see on upcoming episodes of this series bounced from VHI that is often times straight no chaser when it comes to relationships? Henson wouldn’t provide any clues – as closed mouthed about the show as a real detective who asks the questions not the other way around.

“As you can see in the very first episode there was a funeral so one of the characters has passed away,” 42 year old Henson said, referring to Raquel who owned a boutique in Atlanta. “I can tell you there’s going to be a whole lot more drama in the show. I don’t want to give too much away. But, there’s going to be a lot of skin on the show this year. There’s going to be a lot of Darrin Dewitt Henson on the show this year.”

You’ll be seeing a lot of him this year on the big screen in more ways than one: portraying male stripper Magnus in “Chocolate City” considered an urban “Magic Mike” and in the Mykelti Williamson directed flick “Sons 2 The Grave” a drama about celebrity, murder and choices people make.

The Oakland stop of the Empower Me Tour also featured Joyful Drake of BET’s highly-rated comedy series “Let’s Stay Together” as hostess. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Drake recently founded The Dream Big Foundation, dedicated to rewarding young women who are determined to accomplish their dreams.

UNCF is the country’s largest and most effective minority education organization.
