*In April, NBC will pick up the baton from History Channel’s epic 10-part miniseries “The Bible.”

Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey explore the aftermath of events following the Crucifixion in “A.D. The Bible Continues,” a 12-week miniseries premiering Easter Sunday.

The cast is racially diverse, with black actors playing the apostle John (Babou Ceesay),

Babou Ceesay Is John
John is the right-hand man of Peter (Adam Levy) and brother of James (Denver Isaac), and the only apostle to witness the crucifixion. Known as the “beloved disciple,” John is one of the most sensitive and emotionally intelligent apostles.

…his brother and fellow apostle James (Denver Isaac),

Denver Isaac Is James
Brother of John (Babou Ceesay), James is boisterous and outspoken, and one of the hands-on leaders of the fledgling Christian commune in Jerusalem.

…Mary Magdalene (Chipo Chung),

Chipo Chung Is Mary Magdalene
Feisty and clever, Mary Magdalene is the backbone and moral conscience of the Apostles group. Always working tirelessly for the movement, she is relied upon to pick up where others falter, and takes risks that sometimes cause her to be labeled negatively by society.

…and Philip the missionary (Joe Dixon).

Joe Dixon Is Philip
A strong and steadfast missionary, Philip is called to spread the word of God, and meets with much success.

“Let’s face it. This is a story that millions have died for and billions live for. And we feel the story should be reflective of the world, how the world looks and how America looks,” Burnett said of the diverse cast at the TCA tour in January.

“In the end it comes down to the best actors for the roles,” he continued. “But we are, obviously, thrilled, especially with the current comments in our industry today of the lack of diversity in roles and nominations, that we happen to have a very, very diverse cast that are reflective of the world. We even have an Irish guy.”
