You can say what you want about the eccentric, and elusive Al Haymon, but this one thing is for sure. He has become one of the most powerful men in boxing. And folks, to be quite honest with you he has really earned that title.
He not only advises the one and only Floyd ” Money” Mayweather, but there’s such a long list of fighters that he has signed that’s it’s probably not enough room to fit in this edition. But just to name a few that were showcased last Saturday night on the Premier Boxing show that was telecast live on the NBC network, you had Keith “One Time” Thurman going against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, Adrian “The Problem” Broner vs John Molina, and Abner Mares vs Arturo Santos Reyes.
These were the featured bouts out of about ten that were showcased and the most entertaining one in this writers opinion was Thurman vs Guerrero the main event in which we saw Thurman put on such a thrilling display that there was talk at the end of the day by many ringside observers wanting to see him go against Mayweather ( we’ll see how that goes).
I’ve been to quite a number of boxing events that were either telecast by HBO or Showtime, and not to take anything from them I think that the production put on by NBC made for an interesting night. Because number one, they made it accessible to the average person who can’t afford to see some good fights on cable or pay per view. You could just turn on your television and go right to your local NBC affiliate station and watch it live.
I think what was really nice was the giant high definition screens that were right above the ring ( these things were huge!)
And with Al Michaels as the host, and Marv Albert sitting ringside with ” Sugar” Ray Leonard along with Laila Ali this made for a very delightful night of boxing.
I also hear that Al Haymon has worked a deal with Spike T.V. to telecast the event this weekend at the Citizens Bank Arena out in Ontario, Calif., that features the return of Andre Berto as he goes against Josesito Lopez, and Shawn Porter going against Roberto Garcia this Friday night. And once again this is another edition of Premier Boxing Champions that’s also being promoted by Goossen Promotions.
Our hats certainly go off to Al Haymon who has gotten off to a great start.
The Mayweather vs Pacquiao press tour arrives in Los Angeles this Wednsday at the Nokia Theatre. This one is the most anticipated match in boxing since Ali Frazier I and folks, after five years of this in the making, it’s about time. May 2 is when this is set to take place and these guys are going to make more money than Carter has liver pills. As I always say, we’ll see what happens.
