You Already KNOW!! Big Freedia Queen Diva isn’t Going Anywhere

“We don’t twerk, we bounce!” – Big Freedia

If you didn’t already know Big Freedia the queen of bounce is continuing on in the promotion of the bounce movement. A New Orleans native, with a huge honest, humble, and helpful personality, has shed light to an underground movement and dance culture that has been around since the 80s.

Freddie Ross, better known as Big Freedia the Queen Diva, has been in the game for 15 years strong. His purpose is to make the world “aware of bounce music and it’s underground music.” He isn’t just doing this for fame or notoriety. It has been a long hustle to put the culture on the map.

“I’m very consistent in what I do and I have really worked hard. I’ve just been really on the grind making people aware of bounce music, the culture of New Orleans, and how I get down.”

Just like many dance styles in the black community, bounce mimics a style of African tribal dance. From the free movements to the free attitudes, bounce is overall just a feel-good style of music and dance.

“It comes from West Indies Africa, the style called Mapouka, which is the style of dancing that they do. The women in tribes would get in these different circles and enjoy themselves and just lay there hair down and not be judged or think that the style of dancing is derogatory to them or to anybody.”

Of course just as with everything else, the dance has evolved as the times and generations have changed.

Bounce is a dance for all people, from all walks of life. There aren’t any secrets; there aren’t any tips to take part in the bounce movement aside from simply moving your “azzzzzz”. Freedia explains:

“It’s all about rhythm, the beat, the motion in the legs, in the spine. Your body has a part to play in the whole movement.” Since it happens to fall in the category of hip-hop, bounce is very versatile in movements. “It depends on what style of dance you’re doing,” the Queen Diva shares, “If you’re going to do the twerking with your hands on your knees and your back up-right or if you’re doing the bend-over bust it open position.”

Those moves may sound as though they are for women only, but baaaby, men bounce too! Big Freedia says DJ Jubilee, whom she says is “one of the wonderful artist down in New Orleans,” was the bounce idol that was on stage with other men doing bounce. If you didn’t know, DJ Jubilee is known for having the first recorded song using the work twerk.

“Everybody looked at and everybody wanted to be like him. It was Dr. Jubilee and nothing but guys that would get on stage and twerk, pop and flip and just do the New Orleans thing. So there are some guys that aren’t afraid to do it, straight guys.”

There are styles of dance within the bounce culture that men in particular do, for example “The Peterpan,” which is a more consistent and faster version of a Tootsie Roll. Then there are also shoulder movements and footwork.

Watch the ‘Peterpan’:

For those of you looking lost like ‘is this like twerking?’ or ‘let me look this up on YouTube’ don’t worry; Big Freedia knows all things bounce. For those just starting out, you need to grasp the concept of making your butt bounce like a basketball. Easy thought for some, for others, not so much. Freedia says the most basic move would be bending over, “like touching your toes and making the legs do a little dip and your butt would be going up and down.” And if you still can’t get the hang of it, get to one of her shows early and take a class (as she is known for giving them and calling folks out on stage).

Or watch him on Fuse. With last weeks’ launching of the third season of his docu-style show “Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce,” we are definitely in for more excitement, more fun, more drama, and more bounce this season!

“There are no boundaries if we allow it,” Big Freedia shared about the limitations of what it recorded in his life. The show took off in season two where Freedia offered the world an unscripted look inside of his life; his family, his mom’s battle with cancer, his artistry, and all things bounce in New Orleans. As the most popular series in Fuse history, it’s no wonder things are taking off for him!

Rolling Stone named Big Freedia’s “Just Be Free” as one of the BEST EDM, electronic and dance albums of 2014. There will be a UK tour with stops in Paris and Berlin to “show the other side of the world what we do,” Freedia dished. There is an autobiography in the works “God Save the Queen Diva” set to release this summer. And of course, there is a season four already scheduled for immediate release! If you didn’t know the tea before about Big Freedia and the bounce movement, you’ll soon find out!
