Mo’Nique Explains Why She Refused to Promote ‘Precious’ at Cannes

*No one can say Mo’Nique isn’t fulfilling her promotional duties for “Blackbird.”

So far, her appearances on CNN and Inside Edition have also allowed her to set the record straight regarding “Precious” director Lee Daniels, who said Hollywood has blackballed the Oscar winner because she is difficult to work with and expected payment to promote the film.

During her latest stop this morning on “Access Hollywood Live!” Mo’Nique was asked about reports that she refused an invitation to promote “Precious” at the Cannes Film Festival because they wouldn’t pay her.

Mo’Nique told co-hosts Billy Bush and Kit Hoover that she did everything she was contracted to do after signing on for just $50,000 to star in Daniels’ film, insisting she had her “friend hat” on while negotiating that relatively small sum, and not her “business hat.”

The actress said she fulfilled all of her promotional obligations in the U.S., but when it was time to plug the film in various countries overseas – something that was not a part of her original contract – Mo’Nique said she opted to spend what little down time she had at home with her family.

She said the folks at Cannes tried on three different occasions to get her to the festival, and on the third phone call, she asked if there was “a dollar amount attached” to the offer. Cannes said they don’t pay for actors to promote their films, and the matter was finally put to rest.

Until now…
