‘A Sugar Bug on My Tooth!’: New Illustrated Children’s Book Helps Ease Fear of 1st Visit to Dentist

A Sugar Bug on My Tooth!
*NEW YORK — February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and Dr. Linda Sturrup is on a crusade—a crusade to ensure that children get an early start on their oral healthcare.

In addition to practicing general dentistry in Houston treating children and adults, Sturrup is the author of a children’s book which enlightens families on what to expect during a child’s first visit to the dentist.

With almost 20 percent of kids between the ages of 2 and 19 having untreated cavities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s an issue that needs awareness. Sturrup’s book, A Sugar Bug on My Tooth, which is illustrated by Reginald William Butler, helps parents put their young children’s minds at ease when going for a dental checkup.

Sturrup earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Indiana University, a Master of Science degree in biology from Prairie View A&M University and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. She is a 2009 graduate of the Institute of Children’s Literature (Writing for Children and Teenagers Course).

“It’s very common for children to be afraid of going to the dentist and National Children’s Dental Health Month is the perfect time to assuage their fear,” said Sturrup, whose book follows young Natalie Jean on her first visit to the dentist. “I’m hoping to encourage parents to make dental health more of a priority and to get their children excited about establishing healthy oral hygiene habits for life.”

Originally published in English, the book (Un Bichito en Mi Diente) is now available in Spanish. Illustrated by Butler, a veteran artist-writer who has worked for Sesame Workshop, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, the book is available in paperback and e-book formats at www.asugarbugonmytooth.com, Amazon.com, Authorhouse.com, Barnesandnoble.com and Booksamillion.com, as well as at your local bookstore. A Microsoft Windows 8 ReadPlay app, which turns a book into an interactive experience, is also now available for the title.
