Taraji P. Henson on Cookie’s Outfits: ‘She’s 17 Years Behind the Curve’

*You can’t tell Cookie she ain’t fly.

And that term “fly” goes right along with the “Empire” character’s dated ensembles, according to the actress who plays her.

“She’s caught in a time warp a bit; she’s kind of 17 years behind the curve in fashion sometimes,” Taraji P. Henson said in interviews this week. “She’s trying to find her way.”

Knowing Ms. Lyon’s fashion sense, Taraji says, helps her to nail the role.

“It’s definitely a part of the process for the actor. I wouldn’t know who Cookie was if I didn’t know what she liked to wear,” she says. “That’s a huge part of who she is. It tells a lot of her story.”

As previously reported, “Empire” has become the first program in the history of Nielsen’s People Meters (since 1991) to grow in total viewers with each of its six episodes following its premiere. Tonight, it looks to make it seven.

Below, Taraji gives us her take on why the numbers keep growing each week.

“Empire” airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on FOX.

  1. I love Cookie’s clothes too, the media and press try to hate on her and try to make her seem too ghetto, but most of her clothes are sharp and wearable in 2015.
Even though I love her style, I do not think it is realistic for her to always be dressed ghetto fabulous. Cookie is at work, Anika is sitting on Cookie’s throne, even if Cookie and Luscious do not get back together in a formal way, Cookie is not okay with Anika being the public Queen of Empire while Cookie pulls the strings in the background. In reality, Cookie would ‘cop’ Anika’s style on the sly and mix it in with her signature style. Cookie would make sure that Luscious sees her wearing high class designer business apparel (chic but conservative chic) and she would change up her approach to Luscious to take Anika off her game.
