WTH?! Fox Affiliate Shows Image of Obama Instead of Rape Suspect

obama picture error Fox 5 San Diego*File this under WTH!

It’s only human to make mistakes, but San Diego’s Fox 5 (KSWB-TV) took it to another level when they aired a picture of President Barack Obama instead of a suspected rapist on Friday.

According to The New York Daily News, the image with Obama featuring the caption “no charges,” appeared on a screen behind news anchor Kathleen Bade for about five seconds. The publication cited the station’s website, which identified Fox 5 San Diego, a Tribune Broadcasting subsidiary, as in the 28th-largest media market in the country.

Regarding the Bade’s report, the Raw Story blog noted that it centered on how San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis’ office didn’t prosecute a person of interest in a rape case involving students at San Diego State University.

Despite noticing its mistake right away, the Fox 5 San Diego’s broadcast ran for an hour without following up with a correction.

“Yeah, there was an accident when they had an over-the-shoulder [view during the broadcast]” the station’s assignment editor Mike Wille told the Times of San Diego. “It wasn’t on purpose.”

So why didn’t Fox 5 San Diego run a correction?

“They really don’t do that when it’s a small thing like that,” Wille said.

So how do you take this? Was this a simple mistake on Fox 5 San Diego’s part or was there something else behind what happened and the station’s reasoning for not correcting its mistake?
