Common Talks ‘Selma’ Oscar Snubs; Breakup with Serena Williams (Watch)

*Common might not be in a relationship with tennis icon Serena Williams anymore, but the two remain friends he told Meredith Vieira.

On the “The Meredith Vieira Show,” the Golden-Globe winner opened up about his breakup with Williams as well as the “Selma” snub by the Oscars, according.

“Yeah, yeah it was kind of eventually a mutual breakup but she initiated it. It’s okay though, for me we’ve got a great understanding and I care about her as a person,” he said.

He added, “I think most of the people that I’ve dealt with in my adult life, the woman I have dealt with I care about so we can keep that friendship. It’s not like every person you talk to every other day but you still have that respect and you have love for them and want to see them do well.”

Common went on to talk about the recognition and acclaim of “Selma,” and how he’s both grateful and disappointed in the Oscars.

“I don’t really use the word snub. That’s not a word I ever used before. I have to say that we are grateful that Selma has been nominated for best picture and we are grateful we have been nominated for best original song.”

He added, “of course I was disappointed, I wanted Ava DuVernay and David Oyelowo and everybody to receive their nominations but we also understand this movie was about voting right, and the voting process, and if that didn’t happen this time we’ve got to respect that they weren’t voted to be nominated this time, but hopefully they will in the future.”

He continued with, “the impact the movie is having is something to be celebrated when you know people have bought tickets for junior high school students, across country the country this has been happening, for students to go attend this movie. Wealthy people said we are going to gather our money so we make sure students see this movie and churches black and white have taken their congregations…that’s impact you want to have. I’m just grateful to be a part of it. ”

  1. So, I guess he knows how Ledisi felt when his weak ass snubbed her because he didn’t have the balls to say no to Bouncy, and allowed her to perform a song that Ledisi actually performed in the movie, AND was Emmy nominated for, WHILE Ledisi was present in the audience. The only thing worse than a man with weak balls is a man with a weak mind. So far, he’s two for two.

  2. Ledisi didn’t write the song and wasn’t the first person to ever sing it. Ledisi shouldn’t want something handed to her and I am sure she doesn’t. Hopefully, she learn something and will advocate for herself in the future. There’s also this thing called management. They are in a business and closed mouths don’t get fed. She should have asked just as Beyoncé asked. She needs to learn to be a go getter. This is America. That’s how it works.

If women stopped calling men weak at the drop of a dime and because they have a different opinion, more would have one. This man is a hard worker, who loves his mom, women, and life. What more could be asked of him? If he is weak minded and has “weak balls”, then the bar is set really high for men and know one will be able to reach it. We have to stop being so loosed lip as women and stop attacking black men without considering the effect. When black men are torn down haphazardly by black women, it opens the door for everyone to disrespect and tear them down and pushes them away.
