‘Tithing’ as a ‘Sunday Morning Stickup’ Author Sues TD Jakes’ Potter’s House Church

*When David Lee Richardson wrote a book that essentially implied tithing is a rip-off, it appears he didn’t think the consequences all the way through.

Especially since the church he held a leadership position in, was none other than the Dallas, Texas mega-church, The Potter’s House, founded by public figure Bishop T.D. Jakes.

Now, after being stripped of his title and told that he and his family are no longer welcome at the church, Richardson has filed a lawsuit.

The church has a congregational attendance rate of 17,000 and is home to familiar names like Sheryl Brady, Joby Brady, and Mark Jeffries.

Richardson’s book,  “Sunday Morning Stickup: What Your Pastor Doesn’t Want You To Know About Tithes,” – yep, that’s the title, is a self-published work.

    • It depends on what the minister is doing with the tithes, so why did the others ministers get angry and put him out of the church the church is suppose to accept a person for who they are, I think when they met with him they did not like the way he responded that to me is very sad that ministers respond like that they act like politicians.

      • Hebrews 7 King James Version (KJV)

        7 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;

        2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;

        3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

        4 Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.

        5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:

        6 But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.

        7 And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.

        8 And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.

        9 And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.

        10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.

        11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

        12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

        13 For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.

        14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

        15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,

        16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

        17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

        18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.

        19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

        20 And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest:

        21 (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)

        22 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.

        23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:

        24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.

        25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

        26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

        27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

        28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.

  1. How can he get upset to the point of suing the church, is he trying to get his Sunday morning stick up money? I wouldn’t want to be anywhere I’m not wanted, especially with my children. He is suppose to be the head of the family and yet he puts their emotional welfare at stake and then he wants to blame the church. Why? It was the title of that so-called book that he put on social media that got the attention that he wanted from his fellow ministers. He needs to shut up and take it like a man and go on to another church if he can find one that will trust him. God bless him.

  2. The Bible teaches about tithing you don’t neewd to write a book about it. So basically when and if you tithe that is between you and God. so if he did not want to support TD Jakes life style he should have left a long time ago. If you don’t want to tithe you answer only to God

  3. When we tithe, we give to The Lord because He’s been sooo good to us! Giving is part of our worship! Deuteronomy 12:11 Then to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name—there you are to bring everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, and all the choice possessions you have vowed to the Lord. So who’s going to sue Jesus? There’s no way you can give back what He’s given you!

  4. The Lord uses the tithes to take care of the ones He’s called to minister to His church. Who’s going to get mad at God for what He’s chosen to do? Numbers 18:8, 21 Then the Lord said to Aaron, “I myself have put you in charge of the offerings presented to me; all the holy offerings the Israelites give me I give to you and your sons as your portion, your perpetual share. “I give to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the tent of meeting.

    • what sense does it make to continually give money to preachers that are already multi-millionaires when they have members that are piss poor feeding into their reap and sow ministry? In Acts Chapter 4 verse 33-35 Paul collected money from people that sold their houses and land. And in turn Paul gave that money to the poor which had need. They can collect all year and at least buy property for the homeless and poor to sleep in. Or at least their members that don’t have much. I know they do good with some of the money. But some people need immediate assistance. Then what gets me is Brother David was still attending church and because he wrote a book he gets barred/banned because of it? He brought the truth to the people. Isn’t that what God calls for??

  5. Wow…this man’s motives is messing up his blessings. Obviously, he doesn’t have a clue about what the Word of God says about tithing.

    Tithing, even while being unemployed for 1 year and 8 months is what kept my home from going not into foreclosure but pre-foreclosure (bank representatives couldn’t understand why I wasn’t in pre-foreclosure cause God knows, I wasn’t make payments while I was unemployed during that time).

    It was my (mega)church and a program they had for persons like myself who came to my rescue when bank wanted to revamp my loan. It was the (mega)church who GAVE me the money that I needed (money in the thousands that I didn’t have to payback) . Praise God . . . 5 years later, I’m still in that same house, and I’m still tithing.

  6. When you give your tithes that’s to the Lord and however your Pastor or Financial Officers deal after that is on them. And God will handle his own business he does not need us to be the tithe police or write books. Just be obedient to the part he called you to, pay your tithes and live according to the word. Let God separate the wheat from the tares. Author was so out of order!!

  7. All that tithes and offerings do is pay for the pastor’s church (business), home(s), car(s), children’s education, wife’s luxuries, vacations, attire, entertainment, fine cuisine, etc. Your imaginary friend who lives in the sky doesn’t see any of it.

    • Tithing isn’t about making these multi-millionaire preachers richer than what they are. it’s to give to those in need. Acts 4:33-35 states that Paul collected money from people that didn’t want for anything. Those people sold what they had (houses and land) and gave the money to Paul and Paul distributed that money to the poor in need. These people (prosperity preachers/prosperity Christians) don’t have the spirit. But God is slow to anger and the big front these people (false prophets/false Christians) put on will be shut down in due time. They do WHATEVER they please and just say “stop judging” and that’s that. I challenge you to believe in Christ with all your heart mind and soul. You will find the Holy Spirit in your life. Christ and being Christian isn’t about living this big fabulous lifestyle. Rather it involves suffering as Christ suffered. There you will truly find who loves you. When you come to Christ the people that you thought were there for you no matter what may leave in the blink of an eye. God’s word is true. Just give it a try before you knock it. Be blessed.

  8. Matthew 23:23 Jesus compliments the Pharisees for tithing, it is the only thing Jesus ever said that the Pharisees did right “You TITHE the mint, dill and cummin seed.. and WELL YOU SHOULD, but without neglecting the weightier provisions of the law, justice, righteousness and mercy”

    This man and his book are written from a place of bitterness. Those who practice tithing from a motive of worship will never be unconvinced of the blessings it has brought their lives. It’s like telling a healed man that Jesus no longer heals today … he would say ‘huh?’ – telling people who have tithed and experienced God’s blessing in their lives that tithing is wrong would get the same response … ‘huh?’ Sorry, but this book is headed nowhere.

    • TD Jakes kicked him out of church. He was in attendance and got put out. He was still faithful to attending. A book about the truth of tithing makes you wanna put someone out when there are people living in known falsehood at Potter’s House? Come on now.
