*Following your dream of being a musician is fulfilling and rewarding, but there is no denying the difficulties you face while working on the road. One challenge musicians face is taking care of their homes and personal affairs while they are away on tour for weeks or months at a time. Luckily, there are some mobile tools that can keep you connected, keep your life in order and give you peace of mind while you are on the road.

Calendar Organization

Touring and playing in different cities every night can confuse even the most dedicated date keeper. When your calendar is getting to be too much for you to handle, an app that can automatically organize and remind you of your appointments, dates, gigs, holidays and birthdays can be a lifesaver. According to Forbes, Wave is one of the best calendar apps to keep you organized. Not only does it store all of your important dates and let you set reminders, but you also can sync calendars with your family or band members, send invitations for events, create to-do lists and merge all of your info from your Google tasks. This free app is available for Android and iPhone.

Security

While you’re away from your home, it’s easy to worry about how safe and secure your house is. To keep an eye on things no matter where you are, Security Options recommends the Canary home monitor. This small and easy-to-use device has a high definition camera you can set up in your home and monitor from the road. It also has night vision, motion sensors, a microphone and sensors that detect changes in climate and temperature. You can connect the device with your phone so you can have peace of mind when you’re away for a long time. And, it is affordable at around $150 for the system and the free mobile app.

Identity Protection

Your home isn’t the only thing you have to guard while you’re away. According to LifeLock, 12.6 million people were victims of identity theft in the United States in 2012. It’s important to protect yourself even thought it can be more difficult to keep track of everything when you’re on the road. If you are a paying LifeLock customer, the LifeLock Wallet app can immediately alert you of fraudulent activity, sync your alert system and provide up to $1 million in recovery if you have your information stolen. Even if you don’t subscribe to their services, you can use their free app to securely organize digital copies of payment information, identification cards and other important documents that might not be secure in your wallet or hotel room. Plus, it will back up all of your information and automatically cancel cards if they are stolen.

Connection

Life can be lonely when you’re on the road for long periods of time. Staying in touch with friends and family can be difficult and impersonal with missed phone calls and texts. Luckily, there are free video chat services you can hook up to your laptop, tablet or smartphone for some face-to-face time with loved ones. For example, Skype is one of the most popular video chat apps with more than 700 million users and can be downloaded for free on almost any device, according to Digital Trends. You also can instant message, leave a video message if you miss someone or even make a call to an actual phone number.
